Annotated Sandman Vol. 2 by Neil Gaiman

The second of five volumes, THE ANNOTATED SANDMAN collects issues 21-39 of Neil Gaiman's THE SANDMAN, with annotations by Leslie Klinger (The Annotated Sherlock Holmes, The Annotated Dracula) to all of the historical and literary references contained in the series. This edition includes the now legendary SEASON OF MISTS storyline, as well as A GAME OF YOU.

New York Times best-selling author Neil Gaiman's transcendent series SANDMAN is often hailed as the definitive Vertigo title and one of the finest achievements in graphic storytelling. Gaiman created an unforgettable tale of the forces that exist beyond life and death by weaving ancient mythology, folklore and fairy tales with his own distinct narrative vision. THE ANNOTATED SANDMAN is a must-have for any die-hard fan or newcomer to the series.

I've loved this series for years on its own. With the anotations my understanding of this series has started me upon this rich path of literature and culture. At first the lack of color bothered me but the more I read the more I appreciated the line and ink work. The depth and personality of the anotations themselves give a feel of dialogue with the actual work itself as well as the author and the editors. If you've just read Sandman or are a newer fan to the series this should be a must read to enter a new level.

This is another one of those "coffee table" books that provide insight to those who do not always see the oblique reference fond in a text. Even if you do, this is an all and all wonderful to recapture the fire you might have had when you read it the first time through. I liked it so much I started all over again with volume one. I do, however, wonder much extra it would have cost to create color overlays for each page. This would enhance the project. None-the-less, it is worth the read and enjoyment of reading one of the best comics (graphic novels) produced. Note: Book club leaders diving into the world of The Sandman for the first time can greatly benefit from the annotations, and cozy up to its thickly written stories.
