Overview

Welcome to Vegas. Home of the Sin City Collectors. The job description is easy: Bring the offending supernatural in to the Boss and don't ask any questions.

Diesel Jones is a shifter with moon issues. Not the best combination to have. His dream of becoming a Sin City Collector had always lingered in the shadows because of his inability to control himself under a full moon. When Louie Fiore decides to test his merit, and gives him a job for the agency, Diesel jumps at the chance. But when he finds out he has to come up against an incubus, painful issues from the past resurface, and instead of bringing the sex demon in, he only has one thing on his mind--kill.

Sofia Cabrera is the new witch in town, and she's more than anyone bargained for. She finds herself drawn to Diesel, the sexy shifter, the first moment she lays eyes on him. When she becomes the target of an organization of incubi, who take what they want without asking, Diesel comes to her aid unexpectedly. They end up fighting the threat together, and in the process, Sofia discovers she--and she alone--can tame his rages.

What's Collected in Vegas, stays in Vegas...

INITIAL THOUGHTS I have managed to fall into a bit of a reading slump, I think it's because I have recently read some brilliant books, which I know is a good thing but then I can't decide what to read next. I also think after reading a book I've loved I can be a little over critical and if I am not captured by the plot of my next read quickly enough, I become bored. So I sat down and started thinking about what book series had books left I hadn't read.  I immediately thought of J.A. Belfield but there's no new Holloway Pack due out at this time, then the next series that came to mind was the Jessica McClain series by Amanda Carlson, but the next installment is not due out yet so I finally decided to try reading this title which is also written by Amanda Carlson. MY REVIEW I received a free e-copy of this title directly from the author, in exchange for my honest review. At the time of receiving the book I was on one of my Post Apocalyptic/Dystopian reading marathons so never quite got around to reading this one. Well the title sprung to mind when I was searching for a book to read and I found this one and decided I was way overdue reading it. The cover features a female, holding some casino chips, with a full moon and a lightning striking in the background of the cover too. There is also the Vegas skyline on the cover too, which does attract the eye to the cover. I usually hate endorsements by other authors on the front of book covers but hey, the one on this cover is by Gena Showalter! I also love the byline of "What's Collected in Vegas, stays in Vegas".  So would the cover make me pick this book up from a book store shelf? I think it would make me want to know more about the book enough to pick it up and read the blurb. The real thing that would grab my attention would be the authors name as I do consider myself to be an Amanda Carlson fan. The book begins with Louie Fiore, the right hand man of the boss of the SCC (Sin City Collectors) giving Diesel a job to collect a succubi called #Damien and an incubi called Ginger, that are brother and sister. The job is a big deal for Diesel for more than one reason. Firstly the collection is to be carried out during a full moon cycle which since an incident many years ago when he was a child, Damien struggles to stay in control during the full moon cycle. Secondly Diesel hates succubi and incubi, he refers to them as sex demons. The reason he hates them is due to the very same incident that began his problems with the moon. Also Diesel's father was killed in that incident too. So Diesel has to do this collection and do it well to prove himself worthy of his SCC licence, As a back up he has his brother tag along, as the only person who can keep him calm during his moon episodes. This novella has the plot about the collection and then there's Diesel and Sofia Cabrera, a new witch in town and their attraction for each other.  As I have said I do consider myself a fan of Amanda Carlson's writing, the pace of the novella or book is just right. There's always plenty going on in Amanda's book. I should say that they are 18+ as they do have some Adult content within them. The job Diesel is given begins as a simple enough collection with a small twist, but  rapidly turns into a long awaited revenge, and gathering information to prove someone's innocence. The mission ends up involving a group of collectors each with their own unique abilities that are needed for the collection to go up against The Sumerian, a powerful group of succubi/incubi. The characters featured in this novella are Diesel, a shifter, his younger brother Luke also a shifter. Newcomer character, Sofia Cabrera is a master witch. Then there's the two sex demons that are the subjects of  the collection. Ginger Elliot is a mysterious beautiful woman and her brother, Damien Stamos Elliot  is a handsome charmer who is quite high in the order of importance of the dangerous Sumerian's. It ends up with a group of six supernatural's trying to take down The Sumerians and bring in Damien. There's lots of action, near fatalities, and the odd escapee, so it's a "busy" read with plenty happening all the time. As the six supernaturals pair off, Luke is put with Ginger and it looks like they end up with their own novella in All In the next Sin City Collector's Novella by Amanda Carlson. So did I enjoy the novella? I did enjoy the book, I loved the interactions between the different characters. The verbal sparring between Neve and newcomer Sofia. The friendship between Jake and Diesel is also shown well.  Would I recommend the novella? Yes, I am really enjoying this novella series. The idea of the SCC is brilliant! Would I want to read more in this series of novella's? Definitely, I've just bought the Sin City Collectors novella #5 to read about more Luke Jones and Ginger Elliot, and how they manage to track Damien Stamos Elliot. Would I want to read other titles by Amanda Carlson? I have already read other titles by Amanda and am (im)patiently (lol) awaiting the next book in the Jessica McClain series.

I love this series. They are great stories, even if they could longer. The characters are very well developed, if you consider the length of the story. The romance is a little rushed, but once again, I think this has to do with the length. We met both the hero and heroine in the first book, also written by Carlson (different books in this series are written by different authors). We have Sofia is a master witch. Diesel is a werewolf who cannot control himself during the full moon. His family locks him in a cage during the full moon to ensure that he doesn't hurt anyone. We also get to see some characters from previous books. Plus, we meet Luke, Diesel's werewolf brother, and Ginger, a succubus and friend of Sofia. They will be the next couple for Carlson's next installment. Not sure when it comes out, but you can bet that I will be buying it.

Usually I am not a big fan of novellas since the story often feels less than it could be, I have to say that I really enjoyed this outing in the Sin City Collectors. Such chemistry between the characters. Well done

~Reviewed by ANN & posted at Under the Covers Book Blog There aren’t many authors out there who are consistently able to produce quality, full-bodied novellas but I think it’s safe to say that Amanda Carlson is one of the lucky few who is able to do this with her stories. In ANTE UP, Diesel Jones is tasked with one more assignment before he can become a Collector. As a shifter, DJ has a strange reaction when there’s a full moon out and he and his brother, Luke try their best to keep that beast at bay. Meanwhile, Sofia Cabrera is the new witch on the block who finds herself the victim of some strange dreams. The threat isn’t one of the body, but one of the mind, which puts Sofia into a state of alarm as secrets from her friend, Ginger’s past comes back to haunt all of them. While Amanda Carlson takes her time outlining all the major details about the incubus, shifter and witch relations into this novella, it doesn’t ever feel overloaded with information or mythology. Similarly, Carlson adds dimension to her cast of characters as previous characters come to play an important part to this story as well. I suspect that as the series goes on, more of the world will be revealed, giving readers more of a reason to be excited. In ANTE UP, I felt as if the romance was put on the backburner for the first half of the story. It isn’t until Diesel and Sofia can no longer resist each other that they fall into temptation and when they do…damn! It’s a scorcher! ANTE UP dials up the action and the heat in the latest instalment of the Sin Collectors series. *ARC provided by author

I received a copy in exchange for an honest review After having read the first book by Amanda Carlson in the Debt Collector series I was happy to also receive the second book for review. This book is told from the point of views of Diesel and Sofia, I liked both characters in Aces Wild so i was happy to learn more about them and their story. Nevada and Jack both played a big part in this book as well as well as two other character which we find out will be the main characters in the next book. It's fun to see the books being connected in this way. Diesel is a werewolf shapeshifter with moon issues and a hatred towards sex demons, he get's a mission to prove himself for the agency and ofcourse it involves both the full moon and an incubus. Sofia is a witch who tries to build a new home in Las Vegas. They are attracted to each other and their paths cross. Their romance is very different then the romance in Aces Wild and I liked how they didn't beat around the bush and confessed they liked the other early in the story already. They form a great team. It was also fun to see Nevada from Sofia's point of view and even though he has this though attitude, it was obvious she actually cared about Sofia. There are also some interesting scenes with the new character Ginger and her role in a bigger plot. The story in this book also is the set-up for the story in the next book and I am curious to see what will happen next. All in all it was a fun and enjoyable story, again the novella length is perfect for the story and it didn't feel rushed or hurried anywhere. It was the perfect length for this story, while at the same time it's part of a much larger story. While I enjoyed the book I didn't have the urge to keep reading when I put it down and even though it's short it still took me a while to finish it. To conclude: Ante Up is a nice addition to the Sin City Collectors, characters from the previous book make an appearance again and we're also introduced to the next couple.

Diesel Jones has his chance to be one of the SCC (Sin City Collectors). But first he must complete this trial run job. The catch, to bring in an incubus (which he hates as a whole species) and on the night of the month he struggles to not lose control to his wolf - the night of the full moon. The mission leads Diesel to the doorstep of the sexy new witch in town, that he's starting to fall for, Sofia. The mission brings Diesel closer to Sofia as it seems she's his help in succeeding on his assignment, and more. I had loved meeting Diesel, briefly, in Aces Wild as the bartender at Jake's bar and was thrilled to hear he was getting his story here. Diesel and a wolf shifter and he's found he's attracted to a new witch in town, Sofia. What Diesel isn't ready to see is that Sofia is just as attracted to him. But it does come to light when an incubus in involved. Diesel has...issues with the full moons. And this assignment is taking place over the three day cycle of the full moon. It's a test to see if he can control himself. If he can and can complete the mission, he'll get his official papers as a SCC. We learn a great deal of Diesel's past, and the reason he's the way he is at the full moons. Interesting the details we get. Then we have Sofia. Sofia is still a touch of a mystery to us, yet we learn some secrets of hers as well. Since the story is set in the same world as the other novellas we get to see previous characters again, and they help Diesel with his mission, of SCC manner and of personal vendetta. Amanda once again blends all the elements into one story like the masterful writer she is. She has a big Urban Fantasy world that doesn't feel as it's overwhelming with action and love happening at the same time. A full story for the main characters. One thing here, I do get a feel for who the next story is going to be for. It's not the usual Amanda Carlson ending, but you have a feel for who is next.

"It's time to ante up..." ANTE UP by Amanda Carlson is Amanda's second paranormal romance in the Sin City series. All of the Sin City novellas are set in Las Vegas and revolve around tasks assigned by the SCC aka Sin City Collectors. Collectors for the SCC are tasked with bringing offending supernaturals to their boss without asking why.  This was a very entertaining, sexy, quick read at only 106 pages. I really enjoyed catching up with Jake and Neve from ACES WILD in this book. Even though ANTE UP is part of a series with interconnected characters, it can be easily read as a standalone. This book, ANTE UP, is the story of Diesel Jones, a werewolf, and Sofia Cabrera, a witch.  My full review has been posted at Reading Between The Wines Book Club.
