Jane Sturgess, MBBS MRCP FRCA is a consultant anaesthetist and former Foundation Training Programme Director at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS foundation Trust.

Francesca Crawley, BA BCh, FRCP is a Consultant Neurologist at West Suffolk Foundation Trust and has been involved in Foundation Training in the East of England for over 10 years.

Ramez Kirollos, MD FRCS (SN) is a consultant neurosurgeon at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS foundation Trust. He is a member of the Court of Examiners of the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

Description: The editors have packed 40 chapters into just over 100 pages by making extensive use of lists and illustrations and filling every inch of each page. As a slim paperback, it is easily portable. It is from the U.K., so some terminology (e.g., lignocaine) may not be familiar to U.S. readers, but the excellence of some of the illustrations and the inclusion of a large number of procedures make up for this.
Purpose: The book is part of a series entitled "At a Glance," and the books in this series are "ideal as introductory texts ... and are useful throughout university and beyond." The specific purpose of this book is to focus on common procedures ranging from cardioversion to cricothyroidotomy. The book meets its objectives.
Audience: This book is for students and beginning practitioners, with a particular focus on those in the U.K. Because of some excellent illustrations and the inclusion of procedures usually deemed "too easy" to cover, the book will be useful to students in the U.S. The book meets the needs of its intended audience. The authors are credible U.K. authorities.
Features: Each chapter provides a "bite-sized" (to quote the back cover) summary of how to do a particular procedure. The anatomic illustrations are particularly well done, but many of the photographs (for example, those that show equipment needed) are dark and difficult to interpret. Illustrations are accompanied by text; thus, all of the equipment needed is listed, and that is helpful. The book is most helpful with the most basic procedures. Inclusion of a chapter on "Basic Anastomotic Techniques" unfortunately gives short shrift to a complex topic. Trainees in the U.S. would benefit more by some basic laparoscopic information.
Assessment: This is a nicely written, copiously illustrated book that gives significantly useful information about the most basic procedures. The use of some terms unique to the U.K. does not significantly detract.
