The only traditional rock band signed to the influential electronic label Warp, Maximo Park are being primed as the latest Next Big Thing from England. Whether they will achieve the acclaim of, say, Franz Ferdinand remains to be seen, but this four-song EP holds great promise. Unlike so many of the currently hyped British bands, Maximo Park don't have a single post-punk bone in them; more apt are comparisons to jangly, literate mid-'80s bands such as the Smiths and the Wedding Present. The building blocks are timeless: catchy melodies, tight, inventive musicianship, and lyrics about being young, in love, and stuck in a small town from which you desperately want to escape. We wait anxiously for Maximo Park's full-length debut.
