Welcome to the sixth edition of Applying Psychology: Individual and Organizational Effectiveness. This new edition updates and consolidates the previous editions. Applying Psychology was written to fill the need for a basic, career-oriented text with a variety of suggestions for personal improvement and effectiveness. The text is designed to meet the curriculum needs of courses in applied psychology and business psychology and human relations offered in many settings.

Applying Psychology is often used as a follow-up course to an introductory psychology course. Nevertheless, because some readers of this text will not have taken an introduction to psychology course, the book includes a concise overview of the psychology of individuals. The same material serves as a review for those students who have taken a previous course in psychology. This edition remains a work-oriented psychology book with ample information about fundamentals of psychology. Relevant aspects of psychology are also introduced throughout the text.

The framework of this text provides an overview of major psychological concepts and techniques that are relevant to the individual worker in attaining both good performance and personal satisfaction. Concise summaries of major concepts of psychology are presented, including learning, perception, personality, conflict, and motivation. The major classical theories of human behavior at work are summarized. Modern developments stemming from these theories, such as empowerment and working in teams, are treated at greater length. Current topics in applied psychology such as wellness, cross-cultural relations, and 360-degreefeedback are also included. The information in the text is based on journal articles, scholarly books, trade books, professional journals, magazines, and the business press. CHANGES IN THE SIXTH EDITION

Two substantial changes are found in this edition. First, more information from psychology, particularly industrial and organizational psychology, is included in chapters throughout the text. We include more research findings to support various conclusions presented throughout the text. Chapters 1 through 8 are already closely tied to psychology, so the proportion of psychological content has not increased. A second change is a consolidation, with the information on goal setting now included in the motivation chapter. Each chapter now contains a Web Corner, pointing to Internet resources for the chapter. More than one-half the cases are new. Several minor features from the previous edition, such as part openers and the job tasks sections have been deleted to further streamline the text. Some of the specific additions to the new edition are as follows:

  • Chapter 1: Fuller explanation of the contribution of cognitive psychology
  • Chapter 2: More information about e-learning or computer-based learning; analysis of contrasting values of Baby Boomers and Generation X and Generation Y; ethical guidelines for using the Internet
  • Chapter 3: More information about the contribution of heredity versus environment to intelligence; updating on the Five-Factor Model of personality; updating on the need for risk taking and thrill seeking
  • Chapter 4: Description of the self-awareness trap; description of the challenge of positive illusions
  • Chapter 5: Role of emotional intelligence in problem solving; new analysis of conditions necessary for creativity
  • Chapter 6: Job crafting as a motivational method
  • Chapter 7: How adverse environmental conditions contribute to work stress
  • Chapter 8: Developing empathy through shadowing to resolve conflict; the confront-contain-and-connect method of dealing with another person's anger
  • Chapter 9: Giving your manager positive reinforcement and recognition
  • Chapter 10: Information about dealing with uncivil coworkers
  • Chapter 11: Use of meta -communication to overcome communication barriers

HOW THIS BOOK WILL BENEFIT THE READER

A person who studies the information in this book and incorporates its suggestions into his or her way of doing things should derive the four benefits that follow. However, knowledge itself is not a guarantee of success. Individuals vary so widely in learning ability, personality, and life circumstances that some people will be able to attain some objectives and not others. As a case, in point, you might be so naturally effective at dealing with coworkers that the chapter on this topic will not add much value from the perspective of personal development. Or you might not yet have enough self-confidence to apply the confrontation techniques described for resolving conflict. Instead, you could benefit more from applying the techniques for developing self-confidence described in Chapter 4, about understanding yourself.

INSTRUCTORS MANUAL AND TESTGEN ACCESS

The instructor's web site for this text contains over 750 test questions, chapter outline and lecture notes, answers to discussion questions and case problems, and comments about the exercises. In addition, the manual includes step-by-step instructions for the use of computer-assisted scenario analysis (CASA).

CASA is a user-friendly way of using any word-processing program to assist in analyzing cases. The student enters an existing case into the computer and then analyzes it by answering the case questions in the text. Next, the student makes up a new scenario or twist to the case and enters this scenario in boldface into the case. The case questions are reanalyzed in light of this new scenario. Any changes in the answers are printed in bold. CASA gives the student experience in a creative application of word processing. Equally important, it helps students develop a "what-if" or contingency point of view in solving business psychology problems.

TestGen is a test generator program that lets instructors view and edit testbank questions, transfer them to tests, and print in a variety of formats. TestGen offers options for organizing and displaying testbanks and tests. An algorithmic number and text generator lets you create numerous iterations of test questions and answers.
