CHAPTER 1

Archibald was a happy, curious spider who dreamed about going on exciting adventures. He often sat on a big rock in the warm sun and watched the neighbourhood children play in the grassy field. He listened to them laughing and having fun. They threw colourful paper gliders up in the air, and he wondered what it would be like to fly on one.

One day, Archibald spotted a bright red glider stuck in the branches of a big maple tree. He scurried up the tree-past a robin's nest full of light blue eggs-to get a closer look. He carefully removed the leaves holding the glider down. It did not appear to be damaged.

Now is my chance to fly, Archibald thought nervously.

Archibald held on to the glider with his two front legs. He ran as fast as his other six legs would go. When he got to the end of the branch, he jumped onto the glider and pushed off.

He started to fall and feared he was going to crash. Suddenly, the air pushed under the wings, and he went up and up, higher and higher.

"Wahoo!" Archibald hollered with excitement as he held on tightly.

Archibald flew over the farm and looked down. He saw the white-and-green house with a porch that ran around it. Nearby was a big barn and shed that were the same bright red as his glider. Chickens pecked hurriedly at the ground close to the coop.

From high above, Archibald could see ducks swimming lazily in the deep blue pond. Cows hungrily chomped on grass in the field, which was filled with buttercups.

Archibald flew down and through the open doors of the barn. As he glided to the other side, he passed by the horses eating hay in their stalls. The horses looked surprised as the glider passed by close to their noses.

As Archibald flew out the doors, he passed over the smelly pigsty where the hogs wallowed in the cooling mud. They started to squeal at the sight of the glider.

Archibald felt a strong breeze and had to hang on tight. The glider headed toward v the garden. Mrs. Farmer was carrying a big basket filled with dirt-covered carrots and potatoes. Fred and Thelma, the farmer's dogs, snoozed nearby on the porch.

Next, Archibald flew over the open fields, where he saw Mr. Farmer on the noisy tractor riding up and down the rows of corn.

Suddenly, a big brown robin he had run from many times before flew in his direction. Archibald started to shake and looked around for somewhere safe to land.
