Innovative, diverse, brilliant. Props.
This is a great, great piece of music. It's not just a CD; it's one long, amazing work in seven movements. Forget what you think you know about ambient music; ''Are You Shpongled?'' rewrites the rules. It's almost better to think of it as what it is: an ambient project by two highly popular Goa Trance producers, Simon Posford of Hallucinogen and Raja Ram of The Infinity Project. However, this isn't trance; this is a completely new mutant form. Combining heavily organic synth melodies with layers of wildly atmospheric ambient sound, tribal percussion, disembodied voices, Raja's virtuoso flute playing, and deep, dub reggae bass, the whole CD is a hallucinatory voyage through an alien rainforest. Some psychedelic music describes events; this piece describes a travel, sometimes floating down a river and sometimes soaring, passing through totally uncharted realms of the subconscious mind. This is an album unlike any other. High points are at tracks 1, 3, 5, and 7, but it must be listened to all the way through.
