Arguing with Idiots: How to Stop Small Minds and Big Government by Glenn Beck

It happens to all of us: You're minding your own business, when some idiot informs you that guns are evil, the Prius will save the planet, or the rich have to finally start paying their fair share of taxes.

Just go away! you think to yourself — but they only become more obnoxious. Your heart rate quickens. You start to sweat. You can't get away. Your only hope is...

...this book.

Glenn Beck, author of the #1 New York Times bestsellers An Inconvenient Book and Glenn Beck's Common Sense, has stumbled upon the secret formula to winning arguments against people with big mouths but small minds: knowing the facts.

And this book is full of them.

The next time your Idiot Friends tell you how gun control prevents gun violence, you'll tell them all about England's handgun ban (see page 53). When they tell you that we should copy the UK's health-care system, you'll recount the horrifying facts you read on page 244. And the next time an idiot tells you that vegetable prices will skyrocket without illegal workers, you'll stop saying "no, they won't" and you'll start saying, "actually, eliminating all illegal labor will cause us to spend just $8 a year more on produce." (See page 139.)

Idiots can't be identified through voting records, they can be found only by looking for people who hide behind stereotypes, embrace partisanship, and believe that bumper sticker slogans are a substitute for common sense. If you know someone who fits the bill, then Arguing with Idiots will help you silence them once and for all with the ultimate weapon: the truth.

I picked up an advance copy from a friend of a friend. I have already read Beck's "Common Sense", so I thought I was ready for "Arguing WIth Idiots." I was wrong! I give a lot of credit to Beck for saying what's on his mind and I do agree with many of the things he believes (i.e. the right to bear arms, big government is crazy and a colossal waste of money, etc.). I think that many people try to push Beck into the Republican camp, but he is not a Republican; he is pragmatic. He is being honest. He is being at times, frightening. Frightening in a good way as I believe he is trying to be the Paul Revere of Common Sense and people are starting to listen. While this book will certainly get many peole's blood boiling, it would be both foolish and dangerous to not hear the man out. This is a worthwhile read. Give it a shot; you won't be disappointed.

My only comment at this juncture is this: before anyone reviews this or any book, s/he should read it! I love Glenn Beck's energy. I sometimes agree and other times disagree with him. But, before I write a review of this or any book, I'll do more than "listening to the preview and reading the excerpt" as one negative reviewer did.

This book is good for all Americans who are open to learning the philosophy, thoughts, and facts beyond the rhetoric and emotional pandering. Regardless of your beliefs, this book delves beyond the 30 second sound bites and into the heart and soul of the issues that will shape History.

"arguing with idiots" is a wonderful bestseller for showing your friends neibors and others what the right way is on the issues. this book has health care and gun control and many other issues of the day and if you dont have the right information with you you can lose your argument with neibor or friend or family member but if you have this exellent publication you will have some very special documentation and research that will prove your point of view and this book will be helpful at election time and whean you get ready to write a letter to your elected lawmaker or whean you get ready to attend a town hall meeting cause it has lots of facts in it that can help you present and whean your point of view. great gift idea. glenn view has done a remarkable job in putting this together and I feel it will make a big difference in the up coming elections

Could it be possible all these Beck-hating reviews are by liberal fanatics that didn't actually READ the book? The FACTs are that this book is FACT based and provides excellent arguments!

With all the research, and documentation of the facts, no big government supporter can deny the facts and truth in this book. I finally feel like I can answer anything, including attacks that just put down the laswt administration, as they were part of the problem too...come on people, take off the partisian hat, read the book, and open your eyes and wake's ALL of them in Washington...overreaching and causing all this mess we've gotten ourselves into to. Wonderful book, read it, pass it on to your kids, parents, co-workers, and you will be doing your part to save our country. Before it's too late!

Folks, could we please leave the book recommendations to actually cover books read, rather than using B&N as your political rant board? There are plenty of blogs/web sites for that, you don't need to bring that here. Thank you.

I have read many of Glenn Becks books, and they are very refreshing and truthful. They dont drown you in the love affair that the media has with this "President". They tell what is really going on. What Congress and the Whitehouse doesnt want you to know. Im sure this book is going to be another best seller for him. To the other reviewer that said that he doesnt know what he's talking about..If he didnt, his books wouldnt have stayed on the NY Times Best Seller list for an emormous amount of time. I dont see any authors from "your side" making books that stay #1 ..or even get to #1.

I am almost done "An Inconvenient Book" which is fantastic, and I can't wait to read "Arguing With Idiots"! We need more people like Glenn Beck who are willing to stand up for what is right, regardless of whether you are Democrat or Republican, Liberal or Conservative. This is about standing up for your rights, your freedoms, and reminding the government who they work for!!

I found this book to be funny and full of information that is easily understood, and more importantly, easily fact-checked. I will re-read this regularly while we are working our way through the corruption going on in our government.

This book throws out an easy approach to principles and rules. It provides detailed examples of how past situations have been handled and what took place. One can learn much from past experiences and when to implore them and when not to. The visual aids were a nice touch.

Great book and I haven't even read it yet, but I have read all of your reviews. It IS scary to know the truth! But don't you Liberal people want to know? This administration is no friend of yours either. You do like your rights too don't you? Hello, those rights are dwindling. Your right to your paycheck, to owning your own home, a permanent job, your right to bear arms, to a fair trial, Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Religion without abuse, etc., etc. It's not just Conservatives. We are ALL losing our rights due to this administration. Evil is winning. Is that how you want things to remain? Do you watch the show? Beck does his research. His info is accurate and he has made predictions before that came about strictly due to the direction of the political waves. Beck is trying to wake us all up! Take your fear and channel it towards being an activist in order to stop this evil political agenda. I am an Independent fore I do not trust either Party at this point. If you don't want to know the facts, don't read the book. But also don't whine next year how you never thought that something like that could REALLY happen in THIS GREAT country! Remember 911? Now isn't that so simple an idiot can understand? Give Beck some credit for informing us. And he should make money off of his efforts! The evildoers are!

For one of my high school classes, we had to pick a book that delt with political issues. So I picked this book and started reading it, thinking that it was going to be very boring. But was I ever wrong, this book combined all the things I look for in a book. It had humor, information, and most importantly, pictures! This was by far the best political issue book that I have read in a long time.

...the entire book to write a review let me suggest that the long winded negative review of this other person is flawed. In the reviewer's own words he (or she) acknowledged that the second amendment debate revolved around a states right to regulate a MILITIA. The text of the amendment is clear. It gives the state the prerogative of regulating the MILITIA and guarantees the PEOPLE the right to bear arms uninfringed. Maybe this reviewer confused regulating a militia with regulating arms on accident... but I doubt it. Agenda. As for this reviewer's belief that the people of the United States want a strong standing military, I say speak for yourself. Jefferson argued for a standing navy, that's it. I'll take Jefferson's ideas over those of contemporary office. Or for that matter those that spent the last century using the military to "spread democracy". I often hear people who would like to shrink the military... many who are left leaning would like to spend the money on education instead. They'll quote Eisenhower's fair well paragraph concerning the industrial military complex only to conveniently ignore the very next paragraph concerning the government endowed scientific elite. They are selective in their interpretation, just as this other reviewer was. Perhaps we should be reluctant to over endow either. I have listened to Beck on the radio twice so I am as qualified to review as this other person, I suppose. Anyway, I hope that I cancel out his review.

Great Job Glenn! You managed to take real and scary issues and provide some hard facts and examples upon which your readers can base their discussions with the under informed/read, short memory and sound bite populus. Thank You!!

Interesting book with solid sources and references listed in the back of the book... Hard to argue with (unless you're an idiot).

Actually very informative on the issues and puts them in a context that is not too degrading to the other person when defending your point of view.

Glenn Beck's Arguing with Idiots is definitely one of the most unique books I have ever read. In the book he picks out the problems America is experiencing right now and targets questions/statements the average "idiot" would say about those issues. He then finds the problems with those ideas and proves them wrong by using hard facts and statistics. He also adds little "tidbits" on the edges of the pages that helps emphasize the point he is trying to make. I really enjoyed the voice in this book because I could really hear Glenn's voice in my head as I read. I also really enjoyed the format he used; it was really different from most books you read. There was only one thing that I didn't like about this book, the "tidbits" that were on the edges of the pages. Granted, they helped stress the importance of what was being said but, I felt very overwhelmed with all of the writing on the page and if I didn't read them I would be lost the rest of the chapter. This took me longer to read the chapters and occasionally distracted my reading. This book is a real eye-opener to what's going on with our government right now. It's very bold and points out what is amiss and what can be done to fix it; or better yet what SHOULD be done to fix it. A really big theme in this book is how little the government should be involved in American lives. Glenn is very big on keeping to the Constitution because that is what we built our country on and how effective it has been for the past 200 years. I think that anyone could/should read this book. It is full of good information and details of how out of control things are in America right now. Glenn Beck is very good at being very blunt about what are making the big problems worse and what the best solutions are. Although many would think that this book is targeted towards the "right" it really does talk about both parties. I would encourage every American to read this book; it truly would make a massive difference in our nation if everyone was knowledgeable about what the real answers to our major problems would be.

I had never had any exposure to the author prior to reading this book, I found it to be very informative and very entertaining, I highly recommend it.

I found "Arguing With Idiots" quite thought provoking and in-line with Glenn's "Common Sense". Admittedly, he won't be able to counter all the false-hoods and misunderstandings between government and the people, but I believe he brings back a simple understanding of what our government should be, or was meant to be, and how politicians wriggle through all the little loopholes they find. I think liberals and republicans who read this should at least take a step back from the edge and take a closer look at what they stand for. This book is a very easy read, with great monologue/dialogue for arguments and reactions. All pages are color and beautifully bound with great graphics and margin notes to keep you intrigued and to help with the more difficult concepts that may lead a reader to throw the book across the room. Perhaps an alternative title should be "Patience with Idiots".

If you beleive in the Constitution of the United States of America, the principals of our founders and the freedom we hold so dear, this book is a MUST READ. This book should be a text in our school rooms.

Even if you don't like Beck, the info he is able to gather is like no other media source. I verify what he says before I believe it. He has made me more aware politically than I have ever been in the past.
