In Arizona Territory in 1890, Odessa Clay, a well brought up young lady, and her father are on their way to her Aunt Susan, who lives in Phoenix, to excape the lawless, the rough and the uncouth in Charleston. Travelling along a desert track their wagon tipped over and pinned her father to the ground causing a fatal injury. ‘Odessa squeezed his hand. “Don’t leave me, Pa.” His hand slackened in hers and a final breath escaped his blue lips.” ‘ Devastated by the loss of her beloved Pa, with little water and food, courageous Odess trudged through the inhospitable land in burning heat by day, freezing cold by night and danger from coyotes, until she collapsed. Zach Johnson, brought up with high moral standards, which he has been forced to compromise, rode along the trail from Phoenix towards Tombstone. He had lost his money in a poker game. To save his father’s farm from forclosure by the bank he needs $500. Although he is not an outlaw, he agrees to join a gang and hold up a stagecoach to get the money. Ahead, Zach saw Odessa lying on the ground. He resuced her and planned to take Odessa to her Aunt Susan. Danger on the trail forces them to head for Tombstone a town as no better than Charleston. In spite of heat and discomfort, poverty and desperation, Zach and Odessa cannot deny they are attracted to each other I enjoyed Ms Simpson’s Arizona Sky in which she brings the land and its people to life.
