Arlen Plays Arlen: The Timeless Tribute to Harold Arlen

To celebrate the centennial of composer Harold Arlen's birth, his son Sam Arlen issued a special labor of love, a big band recording of some of his father's works, including hits and songs deserving of greater recognition. Joined by a solid collection of top-flight studio players, Sam leads the way on tenor sax with strong arrangements by pianist Richie Iacona. Among the highlights are the bossa nova setting of "Come Rain or Come Shine," an upbeat "Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea," along with the swinging medley of "Ding! Dong! The Witch Is Dead" and "If I Only Had a Brain." Strings are added for a lush treatment of "Over the Rainbow," which is arguably the composer's greatest contribution to the Great American Songbook. Overlooked gems include the bluesy "Moanin' in the Mornin'" and "So Long, Big Time!" (debuted by Tony Bennett with Harold Arlen conducting the orchestra). Through the magic of digital technology, the composer's piano and warm vocal are mixed with his son's orchestra in "It's a New World." Numerous rare photos and complete lyrics are included in the detailed booklet to this recommended CD tribute.

The music found on this album is truly a tribute to a father from his son. The producer and percussionist Edd Miller, who I am proud to say is my brother, has with this album produced his finest piece of work. I have been following his career over the years and this work has demonstrated the character of the man. The production of "Over The Rainbow" demonstrates the sensitivity required for to make this song shine and the humor captured in "Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead" will always be remembered by those of us who love you. Thanks Edd. Dad would be proud of you
