Art and Life

Pop melodies and bumping beats blend seamlessly on dancehall maestro Beenie Man's Art and Life, a reggae album that takes hip-hop's smash formula - guest stars, multiple producers, and remakes - to heart. On the heels of his smash "Who Am I," Beenie Man aims straight for the charts with a collection of songs heavy on crossover appeal. R&B singer Mya brings a sexy, breathy vocal to "Girls Them Sugar," originally a highlight of Beenie's 1996 The Maestro, framing his unmistakable randy raps with a mellow, downtempo groove. Producer Wyclef Jean works his remake magic with the single "Love Me Now," which reconfigures Naughty by Nature's "O.P.P." (and its Jackson 5 sample) with a catchy, gospel-style chorus and a guest rap from Redman. Also on board for this something-for-everyone disc are singer Kelis, reggae crooners Tanto Metro and Devonte, and jazzman Arturo Sandoval (on the requisite Latin-tinged number, "Tumble (La Caida)." Closing the album with "I've Got a Date," (invoking the Alton Ellis classic, it actually hijacks the Staples Singers' "I'll Take You There"), Beenie makes explicit his aim to take dancehall music worldwide, and Art and Life's uncompromising pursuit of pop is certainly the best chance of his career.
