Yet another Brahms Piano Concerto #2 with Arthur Rubinstein? This now makes at least 6 distinct versions transcribed by this artist commencing with a 1929 recording conducted by Albert Coates. Skepticism quickly gave way to elation. Here is an extroverted, muscular account which eloquently mines the poetic depths of this massive work. Christoph von Dohnanyi rises to the occasion providing spot on, vital support. The Kolner Rundfunk-Sinfonie-Orchester (currently the WDR SO Koln) respond in kind. The mono pickup is a model of clarity and requisite heft, not too shabby considering this performance was recorded in concert in Zurich (1966). The accompanying Brahms, Chopin and De Falla selections (all from a 1963 recital) nicely round out a surprisingly attractive package. Annotations are up to ICA Classics' usual high standards.
