I really loved this book and was immediately captivated from the first page. Written from the view of 13-year-old Berry the story tells about her emotions and what all happens in Pinetta, rural Florida. I love Florida and with the story there I loved the book even more. Berry is a beloved character and I felt with her all the time. When a devastating hurricane comes to Pinetta everything changes for Berry. With her father missing and her mother lusting after the preacher, Berry esperiences first love. I wanted this book not to end and was really sad, when I finished it. Defenitely one of my favorites!

A different read and a different story. I didn't like the ending as it left you hanging.

This is one of the most incredible books I have read in a very long time. The timeframe of the book and Berry's narration hit home to me as I identified with her on so many levels....though many years ago. I felt I was right in Penetta, Fla , as a member of this family and the neighborhood. I could not put this book down.....don't miss this one!

I loved this book - I was a bit afraid that it would be depressing, but instead it was a pleasure to read. I felt like I was there in that humid heat. I will definitely pass this one on!

I was quickly caught up in this tale of life in this small Florida town in the middle of nowhere. As it turns out, the author actually grew up there. Nanci Kincaid was masterful in making me care about these characters while summoning a full range of emotions. It's written in the voice of an adolescent girl which reminded me of Scout in "To Kill A Mockingbird." Definitely one of my favorite books!!

I loved this book! It has so many layers to it. Berry was a well rounded and beloved character, this book had it all, mystery, teenage angst, a great description of life in rural Florida. I was really sorry to come to the end!

I couldn't put this book down once I started. What's more, I passed it on to my reading buddy who felt the same way. We recommended it to our women's reading group, and they, too, loved it! In fact, we've read three books since and a discussion about this one still comes up at every meeting. The comments are always, 'I loved that book!' This truly will remain one of my favorite books.

Transports you to small town Florida. Terrific character development and plot. I really felt like I knew the main character. It is a book with substance and different than so many generic books out there.
