  • Alana Quick is the best damned sky surgeon in Heliodor City, but repairing starship engines barely pays the bills. When the desperate crew of a cargo vessel stops by her shipyard looking for her spiritually-advanced sister Nova,
Alana stows away. Maybe her boldness will land her a long-term gig on the crew.
But the Tangled Axon proves to be more than star-watching and plasma coils. The chief engineer thinks he's a wolf. The pilot fades in and out of existence. The captain is all blond hair, boots, and ego... and Alana can't keep her eyes off her. But there's little time for romance: Nova's in danger and someone will do anything — even destroying planets — to get their hands on her!

It's been a long time since I found a book with characters that lived and breathed and bled and transported me deep inside their world. Alana's problems are the problems of a living, breathing person. Her solutions get her into ever deeper trouble. The plot is interesting, with intriguing twists and turns that are utterly consistent with the world.

A great novel. I will read it again and again. I can't wait to read what's next!

Much like the journey of the book's main character, once you've stowed away into this book there's no turning back until you get to the end. The characters were well done and the reader gets to a point where you really care for these people. You find yourself rooting for them, shedding a tear with them, and falling in love with them. The non-traditional relationships in the book were also a breath of fresh air. It was nice to see a diverse group of characters and groupings among all the characters and it made them come alive in a way that the stereotypical pairings couldn't dream of doing. The action is paced out fairly well and the story only lags ever so slightly in some parts, but not that you even really notice all that much. Plus the plot twists she throws into the mix more than make up for it. For a debut novel, Jacqueline Koyanagi knocks it out of the park. I highly recommend and can't wait for another adventure in the Tangled Axon universe.
