This is the definitive book on knots. Here are approximately 3900 different kinds, from simple hitches to “Marlingspike Seamanship.” Mr. Ashley has included almost everything there is to know about them. Precisely named and classified (some new ones for the first time officially), they can be easily found in the big index. He tells when they appeared, something about their history, and what they are good for.
Above all, Mr. Ashley gives explicit directions on how to tie them. He describes each step simply and clearly in the text and has penned right alongside some 7000 drawings to make it still more graphic. This book and a piece of cord will open a new and challenging world of practical adventure to readers of all ages. Mr. Ashley has devoted eleven years to writing this book, and it is based on forty years of looking for, trying out, and thinking up new knots. His drawings abound in humor and the text is full of colorful anecdotes. The Ashley Book of Knots will make a unique and permanent addition to any library.

About the Author

CLIFFORD W. ASHLEY had two ruling passions all his life: marine painting and knot tying. A student of Howard Pyle's, he is represented in the permanent collections of museums and libraries all along the East Coast. At the time of his death he was one of the world's leading authorities on knot tying. Both these interests kept him close to the open sea, and when he wasn't trading knot knowledge with sailors, his easel was set up on wharves, decks, or shorelines.

My personal library of knot books contains over thirty books by various authors. I am also an author of a knot book. Nevertheless, 99% of the time the knot book I use as a reference is The Ashley Book of Knots. This is THE authoritative book on knots. There is nothing better available! Barnes & Noble asked me to write a review because of my recent purchase of The Ashley Book of Knots. This is my second personal copy of the book and replaces the copy that I purchased about twenty years ago. The binding on my first copy has come apart to the point of no longer being useful. This is not a reflection on the quality of the binding, but the continued use that I have subjected the book to over the years. This book is a great read! I love it. If you like to tie knots, this is THE book to add to your library.

This is not just an encyclopedia of knots. The knots are good, but there's more here than knots. Mr. Ashley describes how to tie knots, the advantages and disadvantages of different knots used for the same purpose, which materials work or don't work for which knots. These aren't just knots for sailors. He tells why you can't use any old knot to tie up your camel, how to tie a mattress on your car, and how to improvise a bicycle tire with clothesline. He tells about the people who taught him knots and how they used them. He tells funny stories about knots used cleverly or foolishly. I love the history of a time when knots were a lot more important than they are now, a time before bungee cords and adhesive tape and store bought key chains and shrink-wrapped pork chops. It would be a poorer world if this technology and this history were lost. I've spent many happy hours browsing in this book, and it's one of the few i've read over and over.

My grandmother gave this book to me for my 12th birthday, forty years ago. It is my most cherished possession, and a constant inspiration. Ashley is the J.S. Bach of knots.

It has been many years since I held a copy of this book in my hands, and I remember it vividly. The book is much more than an encyclopedia of knots. It captures the imagination with artwork and background information that give meaning and history to each knot. A wonderful gift to outdoorsmen of many descriptions, including fishermen, sailors, campers, climbers, stockmen, boy scouts, and scout leaders, as well as for those who enjoy macrame' or other decorative knotwork.

This is my desert island book. It has everything: useful information, stories, humour, excellent diagrams and amusing drawings. And it's the most comprehensive book on knots there is.

This is the most complete book on knots you will find. However, it is not the best guide on how to tie knots. It's organized by various tradesmen and the knots that they would use.If you plan to buy a copy be sure to look it over. I have found numerous copies with badly printed pages.

There's plenty of knot books out there, and then there's the Ashley book of knots! No other knot book compares to this one. It's the definitive book on knots.

This is a great book for those who love to tie knots. The narrative is very interesting and informative. Some of the diagrams are a little hard to follow, but the illustrations and descriptions still make the book a pleasure to own and use.
