Astro City is the comic we grew up with before the current wave of grimdark. Yes there are heroes in tights, but it's about the CHARACTERS, not the fight scenes, and often enough the average Joe living among demigods. Cannot recommend this series enough.

2 stories in this book_ 1 a regular comic with art & word balloons- the 2nd is more like a short story with just a couple of pics. the stories are pretty intense. the 1st is about a regular guy having dreams of somebody from another life/reality_ the 2nd is about a hero made up as part of an advertising campaign to replace the 'i love new york' campaign- it's told by a guy who works for the tourism office & the mayor- it's both awesome & horrible- all these ppl dying & property damage as a result to make new york look more appealing/exciting to visitors- & it works until it doesn't. but the sleazy tourism guy ends up making that work for him too- by selling his friend (the super hero) out_for a story/money- to buy a new apt. you really want to kill the guy for being such a heartless dick- but it's still a great story. and wizard world agrees:: #06 on Wizard Magazine's "100 Best Single Issue Comics Since You Were Born" list.
