About the Author

Steven D Waldman is an internationally recognized expert and pioneer in the specialty of Pain Medicine. Dr Waldman has received numerous awards and honors and is the author of over twenty textbooks and numerous academic articles on the specialty of Pain Management. His main clinical work is as an interventional pain management physician as well as being an active member of the medical staff at Truman Medical Center at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. He is a former President of the Society of Pain Practice Management (SPPM)

This is an atlas of regional anesthesia in interventional pain management written by Dr. Stephen Waldman. The author, who is a director of a pain consortium and a clinical professor in the University of Missouri, intended this atlas to be a concise reference that provides a ""how-to-do-it"" approach to all practitioners of algology. The intended audience is pain medicine practitioners. Organized into subsections based on structural human anatomy, this atlas provides hand-drawn illustrations of all major interventional regional blocks. The clearly illustrated figures are accompanied by concise text that emphasizes a practical approach and clinical ""pearls."" Of note, the atlas does not provide a reference for its textual content. I found this book to be an essential reference for regional blocks not only for the pain management patients, but also the operative patients of any daily anesthesia practice. I highly recommend it as a practical source of reference for clinicians at all levels.

Description: This is a procedural manual of pain procedures, accompanied by an ebook version that includes video clips of some procedures. The previous edition was published in 2009.
Purpose: The purpose is to describe techniques for all interventional pain procedures, a list that is quite extensive. The online format of the book is handy and portable, making it readily available for consultation.
Audience: The target audience includes interventional pain physicians and pain fellows in training. This is an excellent resource for quick consultation before performing a procedure. The author has been writing about pain procedures all his professional life.
Features: The book describes technical details of over 160 fluoroscopically- and ultrasound-guided procedures. Each chapter is devoted to one procedure, and the book is organized in a head-to-toe fashion. The focus is completely on the technical aspects of the procedure. Chapters start with indications for the procedure and a description of relevant anatomy, before describing technical aspects of the procedure, including patient position, equipment needed, preparation of the patient, and the steps involved in performing the procedure. Descriptions include all relevant details, including how to get an image and confirm needle position. The possible side effects and complications are described at the end of each procedure. Many illustrations and clear fluoro images complement the text. The book covers advanced pain interventions including vertebroplasty, intrathecal pump placement, biacuplasty, and facet fusion. The focus is primarily on fluoro-based procedures, but quite a few ultrasound-guided pain injections are discussed. The book provides billing codes and RVUs for each procedure.
Assessment: This is an extremely helpful resource for quick review before performing an injection. It has plenty of images and very clear descriptions. There is no discussion of the level of evidence or any references for any of the assertions made. Rather, it is a book of how to do a procedure, not why to do it. It is almost encyclopedic in its content, but is no alternative to good supervision. The video links are limited to a few procedures and they are okay, but not very useful. More time is spent in showing needles than showing the needle imaging. The availability of the book online adds great value, making it more accessible.
