Though they were likely lost on casual hip-hop fans, Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik was full of subtle indications that OutKast were a lot more inventive than your average Southern playas. Their idiosyncrasies bubbled to the surface on their sophomore effort, ATLiens, an album of spacy sci-fi funk performed on live instruments. Largely abandoning the hard-partying playa characters of their debut, Dre and Big Boi develop a startlingly fresh, original sound to go along with their futuristic new personas. George Clinton's space obsessions might seem to make P-Funk obvious musical source material, but ATLiens ignores the hard funk in favor of a smooth, laid-back vibe that perfectly suits the duo's sense of melody. The album's chief musical foundation is still soul, especially the early-'70s variety, but other influences begin to pop up as well. Some tracks have a spiritual, almost gospel feel (though only in tone, not lyrical content), and the Organized Noize production team frequently employs the spacious mixes and echo effects of dub reggae in creating the album's alien soundscapes. In addition to the striking musical leap forward, Dre and Big Boi continue to grow as rappers; their flows are getting more tongue-twistingly complex, and their lyrics more free-associative. Despite a couple of overly sleepy moments during the second half, ATLiens is overall a smashing success thanks to its highly distinctive style, and stands as probably OutKast's most focused work (though it isn't as wildly varied as subsequent efforts). The album may have alienated (pun recognized, but not intended) the more conservative wing of the group's fans, but it broke new ground for Southern hip-hop and marked OutKast as one of the most creatively restless and ambitious hip-hop groups of the '90s.

This is definately the duo's best album. This albums places them as not only the best rap duo, but overall group. They can stand alone, or bring in other rappers to get caught up in this alien soundscape with meaningful lyrics, unlike most modern hip hop.
This album went the opposite way of hip hop when it was released but for the better. I tried to find things wrong with this album and failed. Outkast are true legends of the game. No other group could get away with half the things they do. From begginning to the end, you will love this album. A true Classic!!!!
Outkast.....groundbreaking, spiritual, soulful, streetsmart..THE BEST RAP GROUP OF ALL TIMES!!!!! HAND DOWN Most OF outkast'S commercially sucessfull and multiplatnum albums(Stankonia, Speekerbox/love below)are good pieces of music, but are in no comparison to their earlier work such as Atliens and Aquimini. These two Lp s In my opinion are two of the TOP 10 ALBUMS EVER RELEASED....Yes I said it! Basically If u think that Stankonia, Speekerbox/love below are outkast at thier best..youre highly mistaken . GO GET ATLIENS/AQUEMINI Theres r 2 great pieces of hip hop!!!!
It's a shame that only one other person has written a review about this CD. This is an unbelievable piece of art. I began the OutKast journey backwards--starting with the commercial breakthrough of STANKONIA, making my way then to the diverse styles of AQUEMINI, and finally arriving at ATLIENS. ATLIENS is OutKast's most brilliant release, by far. The use of live instrumentation is very refreshing, as is the cool, laid-back production executed by the Organized Noize team. Every single song here goes deeper than any one of OutKast's other completed works...and yet, the depth of the songs does not diminish from the coherence of the album. I don't know exactly how to express my feelings about this record--I'll simply say that it is an invaluable purchase that every fan of modern music should own. With ATLIENS, OutKast ranks themselves beside other creative, conceptional visionaries like Sly Stone, George Clinton, The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, and De La Soul. An authentic masterpiece of textures, sounds, melodies, and ideas.
this cd is amazing from start to finish its almost like they really are aliens the lyrics are sick and the beats are bumbing everybody in the world should listen to this album at least once no matter what kind of music you're into
This is Outkast time travel CD. Before ATLiens was Southernplayalistikcadillacmuzic which was composed of southern hip hop flavor. When Outkast released it's Sophomore album ATLiens it was completely different form Southern. It's like they jumped in a time machine and came with out of this world beats and lyrics. It's my favorite Outkast Album and the first one I purchased.
If you realy like RAP and HIP-HOP buy this cd.Phat and crazy lyrics, with original beats are all over this cd.
While the two cd's following ATLiens were more critically acclaimed this one is definitely their best. This is when both Andre and Big Boi were at points in there lives where they were at peaks artistically and within their friendship. The result is incredible deep rhyming duets over live instrumentals.
