Autism Parent Handbook: Beginning with the End Goal in Mind

Once a diagnosis of autism is made, questions arise. Why is this happening? What can I do? How will I cope? What will the future bring? We need a roadmap, a handbook to refer to when everything seems overwhelming. The priorities are to begin the healing process and to start treatment. The way to ensure success is to begin with the end goals in mind. Remarkably, things fall into place once a vision of the future is planned-a productive, upstanding, and most important, happy adult! The Autism Parent Handbook walks parents through the steps of early intervention by demonstrating ways to achieve the most optimal outcomes. We address the following: Happy adults have a positive outlook, feel valued when their passions are honored and when interest is shown in the things they love. We can help children foster those attitudes in early childhood. Productive adults regulate their emotions, manage their time, cope with change, make wise choices and accept responsibility for their actions. We illustrate how to develop these skills from the outset. Adults perform skills independently and complete tasks necessary for work and home life. We should expect children to do the same, and we outline ways how to do that. Wherever a parent is on their parenting journey, and whatever age the child is, now is the time to look forward and plant seeds for the future, beginning with the end in mind. Our shared goal is to honor the glory that is in all of us, and to enhance each child's journey towards their fullest potential. If you are now confused and overwhelmed, you need a compassionate and optimistic guide for the early years and beyond. Where to start? Right here.

What People are Saying About This

From the Publisher

In the Autism Parent Handbook, Dr. Melmed creates a framework for families to understand, appreciate, and advocate for their child. The book is a comprehensive and easily readable guide for families, including tips on sleep, picky eating, working with schools and Early Intervention, and navigating all the therapeutic interventions available. The author takes on the difficult emotions felt by family members from the child's diagnosis of Autism through adult transition, providing practical strategies for addressing the anxiety and fatigue that comes with a child's chronic health condition. This is the kind of guide that families will use throughout their child's life. The final message, "Congratulations: you are on the right track and moving forward" says it all!

Colleen Kraft, MD, MBA, FAAP

2018 President, American Academy of Pediatrics

I have worked with many families as they begin to learn of their child’s diagnosis of autism. For some it brings a sigh of relief for the uncertainty of not knowing the causes of their child’s behavior or delays can be painful. A diagnosis can put them on a course to seek out appropriate support for themselves and their child. For others, receiving a diagnosis can be overwhelming. I have seen fear and anxiety, literally stop them in their tracks. No matter which end of the “parenting spectrum” you lean, The Autism Parent Handbook is a thorough and compassionate road map.

Think of this handbook as a gentle hand to guide you forward and a warm hand on your back for that added support when you feel tired, alone, confused, and stuck. Melmed and Marsh have your back. The in-depth understanding of what autism actually is and is not, along with the practical strategies provided, makes this and essential handbook.

The authors provide detailed strategies to help you to understand your child’s unique needs, navigate a confusing social world, manage their feelings and be an advocate for them when it is time to partner with school. Unlike other resources you may find for parenting your child with autism, the authors walk you through the teen years and into planning their adult life. They meet you along every step of the parenting journey. So many anecdotes and strategies within the book are helpful for parenting every child, not just one with autism. The beauty of parenting, in general, is to help our children feel safe, loved, and valued while nurturing their strengths, interests, and independence. This book sets you on a course to do just that.
