Set in 1930s Barcelona, this play is based on the real life of a legendary cabaret drag star and revolutionary. In this absorbing drama, Lluiset ("Flor de Otono") is a respected young lawyer and member of an aristocratic Catalonian family. His secret life in the underworld is in opposition to what his mother, Do a Nuria, believes about him and reveals much about the social and political tensions in Spain at the time. Flor's life as a flamboyant drag queen masks his other persona as an idealistic anarchist, bent on destroying the old order. But Do a Nuria, an equally strong character, is dedicated to upholding the family honor and defending her son's reputation. The emotional ending is a testimony to her devotion and reveals the inner strengths of both mother and son. Rodriguez Mendez is one of Spain's most honored contemporary dramatists. This play was made into a film in 1977 and first presented on the Madrid stage in 1982. Recommended for contemporary theater arts collections.
