Wow. This sweet little cover opens up to a complicated tale of lies, murder, magic, and intrigue. Aveline by Lizzy Ford caught me completely off guard, in the best possible way. The story is well mapped, and well executed. I am completely invested in all of these characters.

The book takes place in a post apocalyptic word. Aveline has just lost her father and she must decide whether she will let fate take its course and end up in a brothel, or take on an assignment from a mysterious person. Her assignment puts her directly in the presence of the most powerful family, the Hanovers, who are hiding a secret. The characters are very interesting. I like all off them including Matilda. I like that fact that there is an LGBT characters in the book. I am very curious to see were the story develops.

If the name Lizzy Ford is familiar, you may have read one of her forty-plus YA or adult romance novels. Even in my time as a book reviewer I have seen her many books released, but have not yet had a chance to read her stories, until now. Aveline is the first in a new post-apocalyptic series set in a changed Las Vegas. Aveline has just lost her father and in the emotional aftermath, she must decide whether she will let fate take its course and end up in a brothel, or take on an assignment from a shady character. The assignment puts her directly in the presence of the most powerful family, the Hanovers, who are hiding a treacherous secret. The premise of the story sounds extremely interesting, but I dare say the execution leaves me a little disappointed. The novel is novella length, so this series may be considered more of a mini-series. I believe the shortness of the story contributes to the rushed pace and the inability to sufficiently connect with pertinent characters. It was also hard to settle into this fantasy version of America because there just wasn't enough world building. At the conclusion, I felt relieved that I would not have to labor through a full length novel and not very surprised that there was little to draw me back into the series. I don't mind suspense, but when I finish the book with no answers to any of the questions raised, I'm not inclined to continue the series. The characters, especially Aveline, were underdeveloped and all seemed to be on the same level of basic. They all just sort of played a small part of an unknown story without commanding or engaging the readers to their cause. I think the story would have been fine if focused on one character perspective. Aveline has all the right elements for an exciting story, but it doesn't come together seamlessly. *eGalley provided in exchange for an honest review* Originally posted on Lovey Dovey Books

Lizzy Ford has done it again!! This time with a post-apocalyptic YA book that draws you in to their world. Aveline (17 yrs of age) is in training when her father suddenly falls ill and dies. She must leave her home before the Shield come to get the body and enslave her. She is a half-breed with the devils blood and now no family except one good friend - Rocky. As Aveline and Rocky run, they must split up as they are being chased. Aveline is helped by a stranger who wants to hire her, but refuses. Now she must chose to help him or remain in a brothel where he put her. She decides help, which sets her on a journey she is not prepared for as she is an assassin, not a babysitter. Tiana is the daughter of the powerful Hanover family which most people envy and fear. However, Tiana is locked away, except once a year as she cursed with unearthly eyes and powers. Her father is married to Matilda, who is Tiana's evil stepmother. Tiana also has a brother (Arthur) who also has powers, but is able to conceal them so no one knows. Arthur uses his powers for hunting game to feed the entire town. He worries about what will happen to Tiana as he fears someone wants to kill her. Aveline is hired to watch over Tiana, can she protect her or does Tiana end up protecting her? I was lead into a world filled with danger, hope, and suspense. Life and death is in the balance for all of them, can they survive? Part 1 of Lost Vegas Novellas Characters: Very Detailed and Developed Storyline: Excellent and fast paced 5 Koala Paws

Lizzy Ford is fast becoming one of my favorite YA Fantasy authors. This is the third book I have read of hers and I've given all three 5 stars. Her stories are so creative that they pull me in and I devour them! I won't give my usual run down of what this book is about because I believe that will spoil it. You already learn enough in the synopsis. I will just say that Lizzy has created so many great characters in this book that she has me hooked. I can not wait to see how this story will unfold. On that note, this is the first in a continued story and does end on a cliffhanger. ARC provided by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
