Awake: Doing a World of Good One Person at a Time by Noel Brewer Yeatts

If we're being honest, most of us live comfortable, safe, and relatively easy lives. We enjoy a quality and ease of living that most of the world could not even imagine, let alone pursue. After all, even the poorest people in America are amongst the top five percent of the wealthiest people in the world, and the faces of those who suffer the most across the globe are distant and unfamiliar to us. As we busily navigate the path towards the American Dream, another dream has been forgotten—the hope that what is broken in this world may be restored to its intended fullness. The truth is we know we should help those less fortunate than us, but the needs of the world are so overwhelming. Where do we start? Where can we make the most impact?

This compelling, story-driven book urges readers to open their eyes to the needs of a hurting world. It is a gripping, to-the-point challenge to get involved in realistic, positive change—one life at a time. Building on more than twenty years of experience in humanitarian relief efforts and community development around the world, author Noel Brewer Yeatts urges readers to realize that working to build a better world is not about guilt, handouts, or charity. It is about justice, compassion, and personal investment. She encourages readers to live a life fully awake . . . and doing a world of good.

Like the cup of coffee pictured on the cover, Noel’s book beckons the reader to sit for a moment and experience the process of awakening. Through her descriptive writing, your senses will wake up to the needs of the world. You’ll see the faces of girls forced into prostitution; feel the helplessness of holding a dead child in your arms; hear the cry of babies who need rescued; and smell the aroma of the dump where children play in Guatemala. Finally, you’ll taste the warmth of hope – knowing that you can make a difference by living fully awake. The book is a captivating blend of information. It provides startling statistics of overwhelming hardships throughout the world. It then inspires with personal stories from those who have already been awakened and are making an impact. In 11 short chapters, Noel infuses the reader with the essence of worldwide suffering. She then concludes with practical ways to make a difference in chapter 12. At the close of the book, the reader is fully awake – aware of the tremendous opportunity to do a world of good. Stimulated to action, you’ll never want to fall into a complacent slumber again.

“Awake” by Noel Brewer Yeatts is not only well researched and engagingly written; the author’s expertise and life changing experiences make it captivating. It is one thing to write about the needs of the world; it is quite another to live what you have written. I opened it and did not close it until the last page. Awake, a perfect title... One of my best reads.

Awake is a book that when I was reading it, I found myslef putting it down several times. The reason being that, it made me think. The book provides stories personal encounter that Noel had with numerous people from around the world and how a simple commitment to do something however small ends up making a life time impact for the recepient. This is something all of us can do. The statistics that she provided had opened my eyes to the bigger picture of what is at stake in our world. Awake in my opinion is a book that can is not only a must read, but can be read and understood by the young and old as well as the learned and the unlearned. It forces one to think about how we have made this world a better place than we have found it irrespective of our backgrounds. The take away for me was the statement that Noel made: "So I want to challenge you: from now on, when you see the injustice in our world, be outraged, be loud, and be bold...Let God break your heart and then when he does, let him use you to change the world."

Awake: Doing a World of Good One Person at a Time opens one’s eyes to absolute poverty, malnutrition, water borne illness, human trafficking, gender discrimination, and other global issues in such a manner that the author does not put one to sleep with statistics. The book allows the reader to catch a glimpse into the lives of real people who have faced these most difficult of circumstances and now have an opportunity for a better life. What could have been a book that left the reader feeling a sense of despair at the magnitude of the needs, instead leaves the reader with the knowledge and hope that one can make a difference by focusing on one person at a time. It would be difficult to read this book and not be awakened physically, emotionally, intellectually and spiritually. A must read for those who wish to see the world with eyes wide open.
