With the publication of this second edition, Bart Astor updates the experience he and his family had when his mother-in-law died after seven years of physical and mental deterioration. In those seven years they gradually took over all her legal and business affairs. It was depressing and frightening to have to make all the decisions for her and deal with the uncertainties. They felt totally alone. But they stumbled through, making many mistakes that they learned from. Ten years later when his father's health deteriorated they faced similar circumstances. But with his experience with his mother-in-law and from the research he did for the book, they felt more confident and always included his father in decision-making. His father died peacefully, and the family knew they had all done everything we could to make his life a little easier.
