Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Cats are mammals, and the text defines mammals as animals that are born live, have hair or fur on their bodies and are fed on their mother's milk. The opening spread is intriguing, showing a baby cat that was just born. The vulnerable animal cannot see, since it takes about 10 weeks for a little kitten to be able to see well. There are domestic cats and there are wildcats, but the cats' bodies are similar. A two-page spread shows a cat and its major body parts, as well as a skeleton with what is clearly a cat's backbone. Young readers will learn that cats are vertebrates. Cats come in a variety of colors, and many of them have patterns on their fur. For example, tigers have stripes and other cats may have spots. Cats have keen senses; they hear well, they have a good sense of smell, and they can see very well in the dark. Wild cats live in a variety of habitats—forests, grasslands and mountains. Most cats and wild cats are raised by their mothers. Lions are unusual in that the male does stay with the females and young cubs. The mother teaches a cat how to hunt and, for the most part, cats are meat eaters. All of this information about cats is accompanied by excellent photographs and a few drawings. The final page includes a "Words to Know" section an index. The index also contains pictures, which helps to make this book and others in the "Baby Animals" series attractive, enticing and just right for young kids reading on their own.
