Baby It's You/The Shirelles & King Curtis Give a Twist Party

The Shirelles' third and fourth LPs are combined onto one CD for this compilation, with the addition of a few bonus tracks and historical liner notes. That third LP, Baby It's You, is actually a pretty strong pop
ock album for its time, spearheaded by the smashes "Baby It's You" and "Soldier Boy." It must be acknowledged that for the discriminating fan, those two hits and the strongest secondary tracks -- the rocking, soulful "Big John" (itself almost a Top 20 single), the lovely "A Thing of the Past," the fine Gerry Goffin-Carole King composition "Make the Night a Little Longer," "The Things I Want to Hear," and "Putty in Your Hands" (the last covered by the Yardbirds) -- often (and sometimes always) show up on Shirelles compilations that make for far more consistent listens than this LP. Still, on the whole it was the Shirelles at their peak, with great New York uptown girl group production, if not always great songs. In comparison, The Shirelles & King Curtis Give a Twist Party is an inferior and disappointing affair, in part because the album is split between cuts by the Shirelles and saxophonist/vocalist King Curtis, with Curtis and the group actually singing together only on "I Still Want You." The concept isn't the only problem, however -- the material, whether performed by the Shirelles and/or King Curtis (some of whose selections are instrumental), is run-of-the-mill early-'60s R&B-rock, sounding like an entire LP of filler tracks. The three CD bonus cuts include the 45 version of their 1960 single "I Saw a Tear"; the mono version of "Baby It's You," which has a different vocal than the stereo one; and the bizarre 1962 single "Hurry Home to Me (Soldier Boy)," in which a singer credited only as Valli sings an entirely different song over the Shirelles' recording of "Soldier Boy," Scepter Records not even bothering to remove the Shirelles' vocals.
