- Easter Oratorio (Oster-Oratorium: "Kommt, eilet und laufet"), BWV 249 (BC D8)
- Magnificat, for 5 voices, 5-part chorus, orchestra & continuo in D major, BWV 243 (BC E14)
Ton Koopman's in the midst of recording all of Bach's cantatas -- and there are hundreds of them -- but somehow found the time to give us the Easter Oratorio and ever-popular Magnificat, too. Both works are celebratory, and their triumphant character is amplified by the resonant acoustics of the old church in Amsterdam where they were recorded. Koopman's virtuoso instrumentalists and singers are superb, braving the conductor's often deliberate tempos. Contralto Bogna Bartosz does especially well with the lung-busting aria "Esurientes"; only the great American mezzo-soprano Marilyn Horne sang it with more wind.
