Overview

These are perhaps the most feared works in the violinist's repertory, presenting awesome technical challenges and demanding acute stylistic awareness. Bach simulates dense polyphony (several melodies played at the same time) on an instrument designed to play just one line at a time. This is accomplished through the use of multiple stopping (playing on more than one string), and the dramatic alternation of dynamics (loud/soft) and registers (high/low). The fugues contained within each of the sonatas exploit this technique to the fullest; the shattering beauty of the C major fugue, with its gigantic waves of sound, utterly transcends the physical limitations imposed by four strings. The partitas consist mostly of dance movements and contain some of Bach's most joyous music, but the D Minor work is much darker, and it culminates in a gigantic chaconne that traverses an entire world of mood and timbre. The great Russian-American violinist Nathan Milstein made these recordings at the age of 71 years. His renditions underline the vibrant dance rhythms that lie at the heart of even the most complicated fugal passages, and he unerringly finds the perfect mood for each movement while always maintaining the music's structural integrity.
