Backcountry Bear Basics: The Definitive Guide to Avoiding Unpleasant Encounters based on 0 ratings. 3 reviews.
This was a light book about camping. It's true most of the information in here is either silly or stuff most people know -- but as a very novice camper (I'm more of an "indoors girl") I actually learned a lot. Not least of all, I learned how to look cute and be a domestic goddess in the woods. I loved it and now feel like my knowledge of the great indoors is on par with every other first-time outdoorswoman.
This book gives you much more than the basics on hiking and camping safely in bear country. Backcountry Bear Basics includes tips you won't find in other books or government brochures. It provides a wealth of accurate information on the much abused topic of bear behavior. It challenges conventional wisdom about bears--never look a bear in the eye, all bears are unpredictable--and author Dave Smith really did his research; he backs his arguments with scientific studies and testimony from experts like Alaska Dept. of Fish & Game biologist Larry Aumiller. It's clear Smith has years of experience around bears, but he doesn't toot his own horn. This book is written with humor and style. It's the #1 book on bears.
