I was very much looking forward to this collection of one-shots from the DMG, since it is the first shoujo manga from the Guild. Makoto Tateno has perhaps the best reputation for her boy’s love works. And there is a little such flavor present. But if anything might string the collection together, it is that all the stories have a bit of darkness and the unexpected to them. The title story focuses on a love triangle between teenagers, all of whom are a bit troubled. “Backlight” doesn’t pull any punches. It’s this honesty that reminds me why I like Japanese comics so much. The second chapter “The Silent Toxin” is one story from a detective mystery series Tateno did in 1993. It deals with a wealthy family, all too happy to close ranks around themselves after the suspected murder of one of their own. Just when you think you have it all figured out the story twists, and twists, and twists again. The last story “Killer Street” is a sci-fi entry based in 2031 about the leader of a street gang in a haves and have-nots Tokyo. Done in 1994, Tateno admits the obvious inspiration behind the street gang element as a product of the colorful times. And she follows the story up with a newer chapter. Content-wise Backlight is solid stuff. Moreover, it satisfies a craving I have for older shoujo manga being brought over in English. This is the art style I grew up with, and one that I feel still holds its own beauty. Not to mention strong emotive and narrative power today. Any of her fans would certainly appreciate this look at some of her previous work. The release however is problematic. While it is suppose to be compatible for all Nook devices, the pages did not display correctly on my Nook Color. They appeared grainy and with artifacts that made reading difficult. This cleared up when the zoom was used. But it is not very ideal to need to zoom, then exit zoom, turn the page, and then repeat for every page. B&N Customer Service confirmed that the problem is something not only to be found on my end. This is also the first time I’ve encountered such an issue with a DMG book. To add insult to the format problems, I additionally found three typos in the book where a letter or entire word was missing from the dialogue. This was surprising. While some quality issues have been found out of the numerous releases under the DMG imprint, this was not a group I was expecting mistakes out of. Furthermore I’m left questioning the quality control at the publisher, which I had previously thought was now on an upswing. The problems make this book, which is the first of the non-yaoi Guild releases, incredibly disappointing. What would otherwise be a strong entry into a catalogue of Japanese girl’s comics available in English; Backlight is instead handicapped by an irritating format.
