Bait: A Novel by J. Kent Messum

No one is coming to your aid. We have ensured this.

Six strangers wake up on a remote island in the Florida Keys with no memory of their arrival. They soon discover their common bond: all of them are heroin addicts. As the first excruciating pangs of withdrawal make themselves felt, the six notice a yacht anchored across open water. On it lurk four shadowy figures, protected by the hungry sharks that patrol the waves. So begins a dangerous game. The six must undertake the impossible—swim to the next island where a cache of heroin awaits, or die trying. When alliances form, betrayal is inevitable. As the fight to survive intensifies, the stakes reach terrifying heights—and their captors’ motives finally begin to emerge.

Wow....That word basically says it all....wow. This is a book that when you pick it up you do not want to put it down until you get through it. You learn about how all of the people got to be where they are. Go out and read this book. (I got this book for free through Goodreads First Reads)

Bait is not a long novel, nor is it a difficult read, but if you are looking for a short book to read that is chock full of action, this is it. There is never a dull moment in the storyline, and it is amazing to me that Messum was able to do so much character development for so many characters in just 180 pages. Not for the faint of heart, as there is plenty of gore and a very, very dark theme, but well worth the time to read. Great job, I only wish it was longer as after two short days of reading I am again looking for my next book.

This is one of the best examples of what addiction can do to ruin peoples lives! If it were'nt so graphic (language) I would let my young grand children read it! The story it self was awesome as were the people involved! It proves that drugs are deadly in so many ways! Fantistic read!!

This was a great read. The story was well written and captivating. The story kept my attention the entire time and at times left me wanting more. This was a very unique story which added to the captivation. Who would have thought of writing a story about 5 herion addicts being placed on an island fighting sharks to get their next fix. The twist at the end was great as well. Based on how the story read it was not something I was expecting. Well worth your time if you get a chance to read it. You will not be disappointed.

This book is a great read that dives into humanity and basic survival, the characters are rich and developed and you find yourself falling in love with them. This book is written in a way that helps cast a grey colour over the world and shows us good people do bad things and the line between right and wrong is not always so clear. I reccommend this book highly.

Typical heroin addict needs a fix, with some fancy stepwork akin to a white boy/girl in an all black neighborhood, entering a16 floor apt. building death trap. Having never even been in the area, let alone the 16 floor bldg., with the smell of heroin literally permeating their pores, the continually withdrawing addicts lower themselves to the points of beastiality in the corners of hell, if necessary, to get straight and find the ultimate, perfect, once in a lifetime connection.
