Overview

I'm Levi Buchanan, and until five years ago, I thought the legend of my family's curse was a load of crazy, Southern nonsense.

No curse can make you fall in love at first sight. No curse can force a true, deep, passionate, all-consuming love that will haunt you all the days of your life.

Then I met Jocelyn Abernathy and I realized how completely wrong I was.

The problem is, Jocelyn guards her feelings like well-armed soldier. She's the most beautiful, stubborn, infuriating woman I've ever met. Every time she talks, I want to kiss the living daylights out of her. But I can't.

Because when we met, she didn't need true love. She needed a best friend. And that's I've been to her...for five years.

But when Jocelyn meets a handsome stranger her first day working at Donner Bakery and she lets him buy her a dill pickle cupcake, I realize with ominous regret that I may have missed my window with my best friend.

If I can't get her to see past our friendship, my new curse may be to watch the love of my life move on with someone else.

The first standalone book in the Donner Bakery series in Penny Reid's Smartypants Romance world, Baking Me Crazy by Karla Sorensen was such a sweet friends-to-lovers contempary romance that left me feeling giddy and warm inside. Being afflicted by his family's curse, Levi Buchanan has found his soulmate. He's madly in love with his best friend Jocelyn. He's handsome, charming, with a killer dimple and the perfect Southern gentleman. Joss Abernathy is a shy, strong, and funny woman. She guards her heart like a fortress and has always seen Levi as her best friend... until she doesn't and the moment it happens y'all is truly beautiful. Levi and Joss' romance was so sweet and pure. It will hit you right in the feels and have your heart fluttering. Of course there were those moments where my heart hurt for Levi, watching him secretly love his best friend and seeing her have feelings for another. Such a fun read, I enjoyed Baking Me Crazy immensely and recommend it to anyone who loves a good romance story. This was my first read by Karla and I can't wait to read more of her words!

I received an arc of this book by the publisher for a sincere review. I was a wee bit worried about this book only because I love Penny Reid’s universe and I feel very protective of it. It was exciting to see her pennyverse expanding, because it meant others valued her amazing writing just like me. Let me tell you how great this book was. Let me begin by saying that I’ve never read anything like this premise before where one of the main characters were wheelchair bound, it’s not something I’ve ever stumbled upon and let me tell you it was such a fresh breath of air. While I don’t have much to compare the book too, because I’ve never experienced nor do I know anyone personally who is in a wheelchair I can tell you how amazing this book was. I think the most important thing to me is that just like penny does, this book includes a unique aspect to the whole friendship trope and let me tell you it just works. I think that I’ve never been a super fan of the whole trope I think that it’s just never been me. But I was super pleasantly surprised. The premise, the characters and the story line was absolutely perfect. ———————— Characters: Joss: I think that I loved the main character for a whole lot of different reasons, for one she was so charming and witty that most of the time she had me laughing at how sassy she normally was. Also for a weird reason I loved the name “Joss” I’m so weird, but just had to throw that happy little detail in there. I think that I’ve never realized how some of our simple mundane tasks can be taken for granted and we don’t realize how lucky we truly are to do these things. Seeing how hard some of the tasks we consider easy be done by joss and how grueling they can be, enlightened me. It’s not something that I think too much about or even consider but after reading this. I’ve realized how much more conscious of these things I am. The most important thing I’ve took from this is how affected Joss was, i didn’t realize how insecure she would be and how that could really affect other aspects of her life. Such as her love life. I don’t pretend to know how I would react or how I would handle to the situation but I get it. I totally understand why when just wanted only friendship for so long. Levi: Let’s talk about the cutest most adorable person on this book ( not series, cause that’s Cletus. Oh my dear Cletus ) I was so pleasantly surprised by how charming Levi was for me. But I mean at this point I don’t know why. I think that I love the friendship he had with Joss and how supportive he was. I know that not a lot of people could have handled just staying platonic with the person they so desperately love and not becoming bitter or becoming pushy. I admire Levi for respecting Joss and keeping his feelings in check and simply just being what she needed. I think that the author did both of the characters and their love story justice. I think that she handled the story with care and sensitivity. And enlightened readers with the struggles that plagued Joss mentally and physically without being disrespectful or ignorant. This story was well put together and was such an amazing kick off to the smarty pants first release! Once again I would like to thank the author Karla Sorensen and Social Butterfly PR for the opportunity to read this amazing piece of work. And most of all my dear penny who without her we wouldn’t have this amazing world. —————————————————————— 'Baking Me Crazy' is a full-length co

4.5 stars really! Before this I'd only read a story from this author in the anthology Cocktales, but I really enjoyed it, and so was very excited to get to read this one she wrote in one of my favorite fictional worlds, the Green Valley world from Penny Reid. I really fell in love with the characters in this one. And of course it was so much fun to get our little cameos of Cletus and Jennifer, and even a tiny mention of other characters we know and love, like Ashley for one! I loved the idea of Levi's family curse for the men to find the one and just know, and it was so heartbreaking for him to have to stand by the sidelines while Joss friend-zoned him and then even decided she was ready to date, but not him. So much I wanted to smack her for being difficult with Levi when he decided he was ready to tell her and give another shot at winning her over. That, her reluctance, and her fight on those things are what kept me from giving this 5 stars, because that is one thing that bugs me in a story. Otherwise, I loved this story and am so excited to be back in the Green Valley world!

Baking Me Crazy is the perfect craving for a sweet tooth! This delightfully funny "friends to lovers" story will have your cheeks hurting from smiling so hard. The exact blend of comedy and romance, with a slow burn leaving you in the friend zone, will have you hooked from the start. The characters will win your heart and have you not wanting the story to end. This was my first Karla Sorensen book, but I immediately bought it in paperback when I was only a few chapters in. A wonderful start to the Donner Bakery series and I can't wait for more (and more cameos!)

Baking Me Crazy does a wonderful job of interconnecting with the world Penny Reid created in Green Valley especially with the cameo appearance of two of my personal favourite characters EVER. Baking Me Crazy is deliciously diverse and allows personal growth by allowing the ability to empathise with Joss. Seeing the world through Joss’s perspective provided unanticipated insight into the emotional, physical and psychological barriers Joss encountered on a daily basis. It is little wonder romance was the last thing on her mind when she first met Levi; while friendship was vital to her emotional wellbeing. Oh my how I fell hard for Levi, it is impossible not to, he is such a wonderful character with a heart of pure gold and the body of a greek god *fans-self* It is a long-held belief in Levi’s family that the Buchanan men fall hard and fast at first sight, although Levi found this very hard to belief until he felt it for himself when he met Joss. Pure swoon right there. Unfortunately, Levi remained friend-zoned with a huge dose of unrequited love. Yet, not once did Levi lose faith that Joss would eventually feel the same way about him, again with the swoon. While Baking Me Crazy should feel like a slow-burn when the pheromones kick in they hit with the speed of light; although there is trepidation surrounding altering the nature of their relationship from best friends to intimate relations!!! It is Levi’s unwavering belief in them as a couple which really holds the heart-strings. I have to say I also fell in love with one of the peripheral characters for her sunshine personality and romantic to the core soul, so I hope Joy will find her own ‘so romantic’ within the Pennyverse.

Baking & Love. What more could you ask for! Best friends. They are not always meant to be more than that, but for Levi & Jocelyn, it was a path that was right. They fit. Any book that mixes love and baking will always win my heart, but these characters opened you up to the type of friendship and love that brings out your emotions and makes you wish for a piece of their happiness. This story will show you the power of love, the strength of a good heart, and the acceptance of differences. The family and friends also add to the happy. This is definitely worth the read and you will fall in love with Jocelyn & Levi. Prepare to Swoon and have ALL THE FEELS!

Levi Buchanan does not believe in the family curse until he sets eyes on Jocelyn Abernathy. One look and that was it - Love! Unfortunately Joss was not ready for Levi. Now 5 years later it’s time for him to make his move. Is it too late to convince his best friend that they should be more . What a great story! I couldn’t put this down. Can’t wait for the next book!

Favorite Quotes: Joy's face morphed. Gone was the sweet, ebullient young woman who'd been my co-worker for the past couple of hours. Gone was the happiest person in the world. In her place was determined, scheming Joy. She narrowed her eyes, and I actually sat back in my chair from the force of it. "There's a wild dog sitting outside." Her voice was shaky, but her eyes were unflinching. The skin around them was wrinkled and translucent, spotted with age. "Oh, that's my dog.”… "He looks scary." I smiled at her. "He's very sweet, I promise." "What's his name?" "Nero," I answered. She glanced over her glasses at me. "After the Roman emperor who burned people alive?" Joy can't figure out how I learned so many swear words during my young life, and I had to try to explain how spending my impressionable teen years with the Buchanans gave me the vocabulary of a drunken pirate. For as different as I felt on the inside, it was strange that it didn't reflect anywhere else. Shouldn't there be a sign above my head? Beware of the twenty-one-year-old virgin with repressed sexual feelings. Explosion imminent. Touch with extreme caution. May spontaneously combust with prolonged eye contact and cupcake purchasing and/or casual swimming sessions. My Review: I will confess to a complete lack of awareness of Karla Sorensen’s genius before picking up this delightful book, but as she was Penny Reid’s pick to blaze the trail and be the first rattle out of the box to kick off her new Smartypants Romance, Green Valley World, Penny Reid Book Universe, well, that was all I needed to know. And I wholeheartedly concur with the mastermind’s brilliant choice. Ms. Sorensen has produced an excellent lead-in for a new series and her contribution fit seamlessly into the oddly alluring and ever-appealing microcosm of Green Valley. Written in my favorite dual POV, the storylines were relevant, engaging, and absorbing. The main character of Joss spent much of her time in a wheelchair and I was quite taken with the care, thoughtful observation, and sensitivity used in enlightening the reader of the impact her medical and mobility issues had on her social-emotional development and the energy and concentration required to complete even the most simple of tasks of day-to-day life that ambulatory bipeds take for granted. Ms. Sorensen’s humor was well-honed and witty, her characters were endearing and assessable, and to my gleeful amusement, their captivating tale effortlessly rolled through my gray matter with an even balance of emotional tone, with heart-squeezes and giggle-snorts aplenty. I was besotted with sweet Levi and adored how he perceived and cataloged Joss in vivid Technicolor in his inner musings. Levi current reigns as King, occupying the top spot on my list of BBFs. Does it even need saying that Karla Sorensen has a new fangirl?

This is my favorite story of love at first sight. Time time might have been wrong for Levi and Joss to get together but after being best friends for 5 years Levi finally sees his opening. Levi will make you swoon because really he’s the best guy you could ever hope for and Joss is sweet and finally figuring out how to be content with life in a wheelchair. I don’t think I could have loved this book more. It will have you laughing and pulling at your heartstrings.

I was so happy to be chosen to read some of the new stories from Smartypants Romance. And Karla Sorensen is totally new to me author. Baking Me Crazy is a fantastic story! It brings heart, heat and as the character, Joy says "So romantic...". This is the story of Levi Buchanan and Jocelyn Abernathy. First off, I want to say that this story flows beautifully into the fictional world of Green Valley that Penny Reid created.  I loved seeing characters from Penny Reid make an appearance and it didn't distract from the main story at all! It brought a layer of believability to the story.  That the characters that Ms. Sorensen created belonged there. I was intrigued by Jocelyn.  She has a disability and she doesn't let it define her.  She has vulnerabilities that she can't seem to shake and has defenses that would scare off most, but not her best friend Levi. I learned a little when reading about Joss, her disease and I was able to really empathize with what she was going through. Oh and holy crow, Levi Buchanan and the curse!  I loved reading his POV's and what really made me swoon was the comparisons that he made with Joss's eye color...read this and you will melt too!  He was what Joss needed him to be when she needed him.  I love the best friends to lovers trope and this story knocked it out of the park.

Baking Me Crazy is the debut novel from the new phenomenon that is Smartypants Romance. As such we return to Green Valley, the home of Penny Reid's Winston family, to catch up with AND meet residents and their soon to be significant others. Levi and Jocelyn have been friends pretty much since she moved to Green Valley with her mother five years ago. They've finished school and in Levi's case college, and are ready to take on the world. Jocelyn has taught herself to bake after being inspired by a BBC 'reality' baking show and has become the newest member of the Donner Bakery family. However, Levi has been in love with Joss for all of those years but she is completely clueless!! When Levi's hand is forced, he eventually makes his move resulting in both hilarious and almost disastrous consequences. Be rest assured though their dreams do come true and the road we travel with them en route to their HEA is inspiring and uplifting. This is a must for both Karla Sorensen and Green Valley fans as this 'blended' debut novel opens up a whole new world for readers to read, enjoy and obsess over!
