Wanting to learn about the history of the beautiful game I stumbled across this fine read. Takes the reader through the birth of local kicking and handling games, to the Rugby, Football split, to the global sensation football is. It not only explains the where and when for various football milestones, but describes, in detail, the socioeconomic situations that caused these events. (It gives brief recaps of important matches that really enable one to get the feel of the sport during that era. The book is almost 1000 pages but I read it within two weeks due to David Goldblatt's fine writing style. I was a fan of soccer before this book and now I am a fanatic. Great read for any sport fan or anyone who would like a better understanding of global development (social, economic, or political). Jj

This is the bible of global soccer history as it relates to politics, economics, and society. It is a very detailed account that is not an overnight read. It is thoughtful, well researched, and well written. I would recommend it to anyone that wants to know the history of the game and why it has achieved such a world following. As a football (soccer) fan and avid player, the detailed accounts of some of the famous match games was fascinating as well as some of the uncommon football history from less known parts of the world. GREAT BOOK!
