Banishing the Dark (Arcadia Bell Series #4) by Jenn Bennett

In Book Four of the beloved urban fantasy series Romantic Times calls one “for your keeper shelf,” the ultimate mother-daughter fight is about to go down.

Complicated does not begin to describe Arcadia Bell’s life right now: unnatural magical power, another brush with death, and a murderous mother who’s not only overbearing but determined to take permanent possession of Cady’s body. Forced to delve deep into the mystery surrounding her own birth, she must uncover which evil spell her parents cast during her conception…and how to reverse it. Fast. As Cady and her lover Lon embark on a dangerous journey through her magical past, Lon’s teenage son Jupe sneaks off for his own investigation. Each family secret they uncover is darker than the last, and Cady, who has worn many identities—Moonchild, mage, fugitive—is about to add one more to the list.

~Reviewed by ANN & posted at Under the Covers Book Blog In the fourth installment of the Arcadia Bell series, readers are thrust back into the magical world that Jenn Bennett has created. Starting off right where the last book ended, things are a little slow to start as Cady tries to get back onto her feet. Lon is absolutely freaking amazing in this one. I just love how sweet he is and enjoyed the internal battle he waged as he tried to do what he thought was right. Though this series is primarily Urban Fantasy, there are touches of romances for fans who enjoy some lovey-dovey stuff in between their action. While not that saturated in romance as some other series such as Night Huntress and Kate Daniels, it does allow for some development in the relationship department. I’m sure everyone will be thrilled about the advances that are made in this book if you are a long-time lover of this series. Bennett adds in several pages from Jupe’s POV and I found that I actually really enjoyed this choice. Jupe is such a fun character to read. As a younger character, I felt that Bennett really captured a young mind well without really downplaying any of his intelligence or watering down her words. While you can tell the difference between Cady’s POV and Jupe’s right away, I liked that the differences in ages as displayed but it wasn’t too drastic a jump either. Jupe adds a great familial element to the series. As you know, Cady and Lon are facing their greatest enemy, Cady’s murderous mother so it’s nice to see the loving side come out a little more. I feel like it balances out the story a little bit better. As the concluding book in the series, I still get the sense that it’s not completely over for Bennett. I’m wondering if her author mind had something else planned up her sleeve in terms of a spin off, but as of right now, I’m pretty confident that readers will love where this series ends. BANISHING THE DARK is a thrilling and satisfying conclusion to the Arcadia Bell series. *ARC provided by publisher

Unfortunately, I found this gem of a series with the last book first. If this book is anything to go by, this was a perfect series for me and I will be back reading the first three books then re-read Banishing the Dark again. Yes, it was good enough for a re-read. An urban fantasy, with a wonderful cast of paranormal creatures banding together to fight evil...what more can I ask for. How about an evil mother, hell bent on destroying everything and everyone our heroine holds dear...including Cady own life. I melted with the epilogue and I'm sure if you are a fan of this story this conclusion will not disappoint. For an action intense, moving and emotionally gripping, marvelously executed paranormal urban fantasy, check out Banishing the Dark

Cady is fighting off her mother’s influence and attempts to take over her body at night. As Cady and Lon try to retrace her mother’s journey to create the Moonchild spell in order to undo it, Cady learns more about who her parents really were. While Cady and Lon are traveling all over, Jupe has taken it upon himself to find out what he can locally. With every new discovery, Cady’s past becomes clear and it’s not a pleasant journey. Battling enemies on multiple fronts, Cady’s learned some new tricks. But will these lead her straight into her mother’s grasp? Reading BANISHING THE DARK was bittersweet for me because I absolutely love the characters and the ingenious world the author created, but this is the last book in the series. I really enjoyed learning more about Cady’s mother and Cady’s untapped powers. I thought the title, BANISHING THE DARK, was definitely fitting. This book focused mainly on Cady, Lon, and Jupe, with a few new secondary characters who added some humor and danger to the story. I truly enjoyed BANISHING THE DARK and I hope the author returns to Cady someday (in another novella, perhaps??). If you haven’t read the Arcadia Bell series yet, now’s the time!
