Cramp's book, originally published in 1856, examines the history of the Baptist Church through successive ages according to the terms then in use; 'primitive' times, the Transition Period, the Obscure Period, the Revival Period, the Reformation, the Troublous Period, the Quiet Period and the Present (nineteenth) Century). Cramp approaches the documents objectively, and especially with regard to the 'Obscure' Period, he allows the documents to lead him, identifying some groups as doctrinally sound and others as containing what are in his view doctrinal heresy. Cramp's work does not neglect to relate the many accounts of Baptist suffering in the face of persecution in a way that offers inspiring examples to readers. Charles Spurgeon enthusiastically recommended the book.
