Description: This question-and-answer review book is a companion to Dermatopathology, 3rd edition, Barnhill (McGraw-Hill, 2010).
Purpose: The intent of this book is to provide a unique teaching tool that tests the reader's fund of knowledge in cutaneous clinicopathologic correlation through a series of hypothetical clinical vignettes. Furthermore, use of this book provides self-assessment and a comprehensive review of the pertinent clinical and histopathological conditions encountered in dermatopathology practice. The authors have reached their stated goals.
Audience: The book is intended for dermatopathology fellows, dermatology and pathology residents, and medical students, as well as practicing dermatologists, pathologists, and dermatopathologists.
Features: The 12 chapters cover all pertinent topics in dermatopathology including inflammatory diseases of the epidermis, dermal-based inflammatory diseases, vesiculobullous diseases, vasculitis and related disorders, inflammatory diseases of adnexal structures and subcutis, alterations to components of the epidermis and dermis, infectious diseases of the skin, tumors of the epidermis, adnexal tumors, melanocytic proliferations, tumors of mesenchymal origin, and lymphoid, leukemic, and other cellular infiltrates. Each chapter has a series of multiple-choice questions, most of which are hypothetical clinical vignettes. Each question is accompanied by a detailed explanation discussing essential clinical and histopathological differential diagnoses. The book has more than 400 illustrated questions encompassing over 700 diagnostic entities. In conjunction with many supplementary images, the book uses hundreds of photomicrographs from the main textbook. The quality of most images (clinical photographs as well as microscopic images), is very good. Occasional images are somewhat dark. Many questions include summary tables for rapid review, or small "quick fact" tables highlighting important diagnostic findings. A list of pertinent references ends each chapter.
Assessment: This book is a great accomplishment and it will be a very useful resource primarily for trainees, but also for practicing physicians. The cases and images are typical of those appearing on board certification examinations in dermatology, pathology, and dermatopathology, as well as conditions commonly encountered by dermatologists and dermatopathologists in clinical practice. In all honesty, the number of entities and the amount of information in this book go beyond the needs of average pathology residents, but for trainees who are preparing for the dermatopathology board examination, this book will be extremely useful. The multiple-choice questions are well written and associated explanations are concise, with an emphasis on the most important features of each entity and clinical and histological differential diagnosis. As the authors note, this is the first book of its kind in dermatopathology and I am sure that it will be welcomed with great enthusiasm. I highly recommend it.
