Baubles of Blasphemy is a collection of Edwin Kagin's insightful, informative essays and poems. I was particularly impressed with the wisdom of the 'On Competentiating Children' piece, the wit of 'Ode to the Butterfly Mind,' and the heartbreaking poem, 'Easter Greetings From Heaven's Gate.' The author's knowledge of the Bible and history are impressive. Especially enlightening are the details of our Founding Fathers' beliefs and intentions when this great country of ours was being formed. It is not difficult to imagine how appalled they would be today at the dangerous blurring of the strong line they drew between Church and State.
This book is incredibly insightful and definately 'blasphemous' :>). However, as Thomas Jefferson has been quoted 'If [this] book be false in its facts, disprove them; if false in its reasoning, refute it. But, for God's sake, let us hear both sides, if we choose' - Thomas Jefferson 1814. As a spiritually minded person I may not agree with ALL the sentiments expressed but there is enough humorous insight to keep everyone thinking seriously about beliefs and to keep us improving our ability to reason. It is only those who continue to question 'sacred cows' will evolve, Some, like Mr. Kagin do so in a way that will make you laugh and think at the same time! Will the faithful be strong enough in their faith to be able to handle the ideas expressed in this book? I think if we can knock down some sacred cows we will be better for it. Perhaps we will be stronger spiritually at the same time! :>)
