Overview

The Bear and the Dragon by Tom Clancy

Newly elected in his own right, Jack Ryan has found that being President has gotten no easier: domestic pitfalls await him at every turn; the Asian economy is going down the tubes; and now, in Moscow, someone may have tried to take out the chairman of the SVR - the former KGB - with a rocket-propelled grenade. Things are unstable enough in Russia without high-level assassination, but even more disturbing may be the identities of the potential assassins. Were they political enemies, the Russian Mafia, disaffected former KGB? Or, Ryan wonders, is something far more dangerous at work here? Ryan is right to wonder. For even while Russian investigators pursue the case, and some of his most trusted eyes and ears, including antiterrorism specialist John Clark, head to Moscow, forces in China are moving forward with a plan of truly audacious proportions. Tired of what they view as the presumption of the West, eager to fulfill their destiny, they are taking matters into their own hands. If they succeed, the world as we know it will never look the same. If they fail...the consequences may be unspeakable.

Very well written with lots of action and suspense. Clancy seems to do a much better job in describing really technical matters in this book than he does in the others. I am not sure how likely a Russia vs China war scenario would be in this era but I'm sure some hostilities from the past still remain. Great read but the excessive profanity and racial slurs were unnecesary. Ryan has become more of a whiner now the he's POTUS (Pres of the United States). Would like to have had more scenes involving Clark and Chavez.

Again Clancy has had me on the edge of my seat with Bear and the Dragon. Co-operation between super powers, the joining of Russia and USA in preventing all and all out war. Sub plots twisted and turned in all directions, leading to the finale, where again Clancy as a conductor of an orchestra pulled the instruments of the book into an explosive ending, which left me breathless.

The bear and the dragon is a top notch book. It's exciting, action filled and thrilling. If you read it at night. You feel as if you can't lay down. I recommend it!

Tom Clancy teams up with Jack Ryan again, to make a good story. Adventure, thriller, good characters and a fast-moving plot make a good novel. Read it and enjoy.

What can I say? This book is a magnificent piece of literature. The first 100 pages were a little hard to take in, Clancy could have set up the plot a little more quickly. Once the story started to take off it was hard to stop reading. I am a college student presently and Clancy's books could be substitute for any political science course that i have taken to date. I=

This book is probably the second best next to Clancy's Red Storm Rising. The political buildup is the basis of a great story that will keep you on the edge of your seat wanting more and more of the twists and turns thrown into this novel. With the spy plane crash in China during 2001 this is a great book to read as a what-if.

I've read this book twice now and as usual Tom Clancy has a gift for intrigue and suspence!! His technical knowledge for the plot is astonishing! His descriptions of the scenes really give you the ability to see in detail what he is talking about!! I couldn't put it down until the last page! I can only hope that the next 'Jack Ryan' episode is just as thrilling!

I have read all of clancy's fiction, and thought that this was actually one of his best. It did take a long time to set up the war, but when it gets into the mechanics of the war we have, I loved it. I would have to say that this is Clancy's best 200 pages. It probably could have stood to be a little shorter, but frankly, I love all of the stuff about the politics of Jack Ryan, etc. I would disagree with anyone who says that the quality of Tom Clancy's work has gone down.

The plot and subplots interrelate well with the themes of a changing political and economic world structure. Mr. Clancy keeps the pace fast and the plot moving along in a way that draws the reader with him. I have read all of his books and liked them --this is the best and fits nicely together.

While this looks good, I am not 100% sure I am over the travesty that was Rainbow Six. That book was basically a narrative of Red Storm Entertainment's current video game. This novel, however, appears to get back to what Clancy Does so well. Since there is not a Russia/China video game out I figure this has a good chance of being more than a promo.
