I fell in love with Karma Wilson's "Bear" books early on in my years as a children's librarian.  They are a joy to read out loud, either to an audience of one or thirty.  The rhythm, meter and word choice is always perfect.  And there is always a "heart-tug" moment.  Karma Wilson paints with her words:  every one is needed, not one is wasted.  In this book, Bear takes time away from his hibernation to give his friends a special surprise at Christmas.  He succeeds, but he, also, is surprised. Jane Chapman's beautiful illustrations give even more life to Bear and his woodland friends.  I don't know how she does it, but she manages a realism that is not frightening and a sweetness that is not twee or precious.  Her animals are instantly recognizable for what they are, with expressions that completely match the actions and words that Karma Wilson gives them.  Her artwork is also instantly recognizable as her own. So far, we have four "Bear" books in our house.  We won't be stopping there.

What a treat, to run across one of my kids' favorite characters in a Christmas book! All of these bear stories have a sweet quality, and celebrate friendship. They're also fun to read and have darling illustrations.

A charming and well illustrated book about a bear who wants his friends to wake him up for Christmas. They do wake him up on Christmas Eve to enjoy a wonderful day preparing for Christmas and enjoy it together before bear falls asleep for the rest of the winter. Very Cute!! I could use this book as a spring board for holiday discussions, hibernating animals, and even friendship. Also contains a reference to the song "O Holy Night" and text with picture mentions Santa Claus. Grades-3

Sweet book about friendship. All of bears friends are trying to keep him awake for Christmas and all the festivities that will follow. Bear manages to stay awake, going to find a Chrstmas tree, having a great time, when all of his friends end up falling asleep! Santa comes while bear is awake and in the morning when the friends awaken, they all open gifts and then Bear snuggles up with his new quilt and goes fast to sleep.

Bear wants to stay up because he has never seen Santa or Christmas because he is always hibernating. He stays up but his friends fall asleep. He makes surprises for all of them and Santa comes. He gets a big quilt for a present, best Christmas ever.

Bear tends to hibernate all through the winter season, which means he is sound asleep during Christmas! His forest friends are determined to make sure Bear stays awake this year, so they find several holiday themed tasks for Bear to do. Will he be able to stay awake with his friends, or will he fall into a deep slumber? This charming book is sure to become a family favorite. The rhythmic story is beautifully backed by stunning illustrations. Readers are introduced to several forest animals and are taken inside of the Bear’s cave, as they prep for Christmas. The spirit of friendship and giving come alive in this story. Bear Stays Up is a delightful must read during the holiday season. Notes: This review was written for Ariesgrl Book Reviews, My Sister's Books, and Sasee Magazine.

This is a heartwarming story that young children will love. Heck I loved it as an adult. This is a gift, so the child I bought it for hasn't read it yet , but I know she's going to love it.

My almost 2yo loves this book. We have Bear Snores On, which motivated this purchase. It's very cute and written much in the same way. My son loves finding the one page that contains Santa. He wanted to read it so much in the couple wks before Christmas that he could fill in blanks I left while reading. Highly recommend!

Cute story, but not worth 12.99. My 3 year old didn't seem too interested in it and the print is pretty tiny.
