Children's LiteratureWalking up a trail, two hikers surprise a mother Grizzly bear and her cub. The mother bear rears up on her hind legs and lets out a deafening roar. The hikers do the right thing and slowly back up away from the bear. Bears are gentle by nature and do not look for trouble. However, they will protect their cubs if they feel they are threatened. There are eight species of bears. Three of them live in North America. They are the Black bear, Brown bear and Polar bear. A Grizzly bear is a Brown bear. Black bears are considered the friendly bear. Sometimes they are too friendly and beg for food. One kind of food bears like is honey. When the weather starts to get cold in the fall, bears eat for as long as 20 hours a day. Then they find a good den and curl up and hibernate for the winter. In the spring they come out and they are very hungry. Polar bears live in the coldest part of the world, the Artic Circle.
