About the Author

Stan and Jan Berenstain were both born in 1923 in Philadelphia.  They didn't know each other as children, but met later at school, at the Philadelphia College of Art.  They liked each other right away, and found out that the both enjoyed the same kinds of books, plays, music and art.  During World War II, Stan was a medical assistant in the Army, and Jan worked in an airplane factory.  When the war was over, they got married and began to work together as artists and writers, primarily drawing cartoons for popular magazines.  After having their two sons Leo and Michael, the Berenstains decided to write some funny children's books that their children and other children could read and enjoy.  Their first published children's book was called The Big Honey Hunt.  It was about a family of bears, who later became known as the "Berenstain Bears."

Stan and Jan planned all of their books together. They both wrote the stories and created the pictures.  They continued to live outside of Philadelphia in the country.  There are now over 300 Berenstain Bears books.

This cute rhyming book describes one attempt after another to find the perfect picnic spot. Each spot is ruined by something new, but the bears do find a perfect spot- their dining room table!

I have the 1966 copy of this book and today it is still special. The book was written when the Bears had only one child and it's about finding a nice picnic spot and finding that their special spot was at home all the while.

Although it's been more than a dozen years since I read this book regularly to my now 17 year old granddaughter, I remember it as one of the few children's books I enjoyed reading again and again without becoming bored. The theme of best-laid plans going awry is preparation for life, as is the value of resourcefulness and, in the end, finding there is no place like home. In my office, to celebrate a new child or grandchild, we put together a children's book basket, including a selection of our individual favorites. This is always one of my personal choices. Didn't realize until ordering a copy for a new baby from B-N internet that Picnic was written 24 years ago!
