This book encourages children to share, “give away their extra stuff,” so that they can “grow their hearts.” The lyrics to the song vary slightly on this theme, lauding the virtues of giving. This is of course a very positive message, simple and clear in its delivery, and memorable in its musical form. This book comes with an explanation of animalations and its purposes, and it is clear that the author is intentional about every aspect of the book: its artwork, music, and words point toward the single focus of learning.

There are many rhyming books for children but none compare to the books written by Patricia Derrick. All of her books have a moralistic message that we want our children to learn. That is why I love to read her books to my two youngest children and to my granddaughter. Every year we either select several stars from a tree to buy presents for or we volunteer at a shelter and help wrap presents. We have even taken our own toys and given them away, just as they did in this wonderful story. The age-old and very true lesson that it is better to give than to receive is depicted here and this is a very heartwarming story, not just at Christmas but as a lesson for any time of the year. Highly recommend all of her books!

A heartwarming tale of Christmas giving, “Beaser the Bear's Rocky Mountain Christmas” brings a family closer together through generosity and warmth. When father Beaser decides he wants his young cubs to learn the true meaning of Christmas, he thinks back on the homeless cubs he encountered earlier that day. He encourages his cubs to reach out to them and share the things they do not care for. What he gets back is even better, with purely bighearted results. A joyous read for any loving gift-giver.
