Allison is a college student who is writing a paper about work release inmates. Some are working at a gym where her sister Lila works.. Allison gets an interview with Beast one of the former inmates.. When she meets him, she is eating a jelly doughnut and he remembers her as jelly for the doughnut. When he calls her that, her sister is somewhat offended as Allison has a poor self image. Despite the strange meeting, Beast and Allison have an instant attraction which is not really a good thing as her sister and many others are very protective. Beast's reputation doesn't help, but he has changed. The chemistry heats up and they begin to date. Everything is going well until there is an incident that puts Allison in danger and Beast at risk to go back to jail. Will this romance work out due to all the opposition and will Beast go back to jail? I loved this book as it is a second chance for someone that needs it for a new life. Finally someone who loves him for who he is, not who he was. Interesting concept and it works. Well written and researched. I received this book from Net Gallery for an honest review and no compensation otherwise.
Couldn't put it down.
Beast by Elizabeth Reyes Boyle Heights Series Book Two Allison Rico has finally found a subject that might get her that front page headline in her college newspaper. The 5th Street Gym is involved in a program that takes ex-cons in to work and they'll teach them to box. Gio has suggested that she even interview a couple of the men. One of the men in particular sets Ali's heart to pumping faster—and it has nothing to do with fear. Leonardo or Beast as he's known to many because of his past, doesn't plan on taking the gym up on becoming a boxer, but it's not a bad place to be for now. Mostly. That girl eating a donut...using her tongue in a way that sends his blood pumping south...is a distraction he doesn't need. Allison is Lila's little sister from the first book in the series: Lila. I like the way the author has weaved in so many of the people from previous books. Not only from the 5th Street Series, but also the Moreno's. Looking forward to more in this series. **Sexual content and language
5 - "Everyone deserves a second chance." Stars! Elizabeth Reyes excels herself even more in my estimations with the second book in the Boyle Heights series. I loved Lila but Beast was so much more, un-putdownable, and apart from sleep and taking care of business I didn’t put it down. This story is more than your average bad boy meets good girl romance. Allison Rico has had a harder than average start in life, her one constant has been her sister Lila, a fighter in heart and life; she has always looked out and tried to protect her from the harsh realities of life. He was a mountain of muscles, tattoo’s, and mystery... What starts out for Allison as a simple interview about work placement for newly released parolees, turns into an undeniable and impossible to ignore attraction. The first half of the book plays out side by side with the second half of Lila you definitely don’t need to read it, but I found that having done so Beast answered a lot of questions that were raised in that book. Each time she was near him now, it became clearer that whatever rules, restrictions, or walls he’d put up when it came to her were slowly coming down... Allison is so much softer than her sister, but behind all that is a survivor, it’s only as her and Leo start opening up to each other that you realize that her sister didn’t actually manage to protect her as much as she would have her believe. As I said this is more than just a bad boy/good girl romance, so much happens between the two of them just to get to the romance aspect, but I devoured it, the anticipation, the tension between them as the resistance Leo tries to keep up starts to crumble, Allison’s personality and persistence just keep you reading, especially when you take in the amount of obstacles and adversity they have to deal with as well, the story was so alluring I just absorbed each and every word of it. "What is it about you..? What is it about us..?" I am loving this series, the author gives such a great depth to her lead characters, the story-lines are crafted on many different levels so that there is always something going on, the secondary characters are relevant, I like that as this book develops characters from the previous book and other of the author’s series are becoming more and more involved in the story-line in general. Nine and Drew play pivotal parts in this book two, and the author teases enough that I cannot wait for their book, I just wish I didn’t have to wait until 2018 for it! "Just because you have a past, doesn’t mean you’re not deserving of a better future."
