If you like historical fiction, this is a great read. I was unaware of the historical facts regarding this story. The narrative regarding the Texas landscape and the character development are wonderful. Brought back a good history lesson about slavery issues pre-Civil War. Never thought I would shed a tear over a dead camel!

I really enjoyed this book. I learned alot about a part of Texas history that was fascinating and the story was fun and easy to read. Brenda does a nice job of weaving several story lines together in a captivating tale of camels, slavery and Texas customs.

I admit it. I haven't been particularly interested in reading historical novels. But this book captured my imagination and held my attention until the end. Who knew that Secretary of War Jefferson Davis had directed the importation of camels to Texas for use by the Army? I enjoyed reading the scenes of transporting the camels, as well as the scenes detailing the camel handlers' experiences in America, a country with different customs, religion, and traditions from their own. Intertwined with the facts is a story of a bigger-than-life Texas family who experience financial uncertainties, loss, romance, grief and lots of change. After finishing the book, I thought it would make a great movie. I'm still trying to figure out who should play which characters, especially Elizabeth, Hassan and Alex. What do you think?
