Becoming Calder by Mia Sheridan

From the New York Times bestselling author of Archer's Voice. Becoming Calder is the first part in a two-part romance series. The conclusion, Finding Eden, is available now.

There is a place in modern day America with no electricity, no plumbing, and no modern conveniences. In this place, there is no room for dreams, no space for self-expression, and no tolerance for ambition.

In this place, there is a boy with the body of a god and the heart of a warrior. He is strong and faithful and serves his family honorably. But he dares to dream of more.

In this place, there is a girl with the face of an angel and a heart full of courage. To her family, she is the vision of obedient perfection. But she dares to want that which she has been told can never be hers.

Becoming Calder is the story of good versus evil, fear versus bravery, and the truth that the light of love has always found its way into even the darkest of places . . . From the beginning of time, to the end of the world.

THIS IS THE FIRST PART IN A TWO-PART SIGN OF LOVE SERIES INSPIRED BY AQUARIUS. THE SECOND PART, FINDING EDEN, IS AVAILABLE NOW. New Adult Contemporary Romance: Due to strong language and graphic sexual content, this book is not intended for readers under the age of 18.

There is simply no story that Mia Sheridan can write about without filling it up with the most beautiful characters and feelings. Hard as some scenes are in this book, the beauty of the main characters takes you over and gives you hope. The prose in this book is superb, the character development, outstanding, and the plot carefully crafted. It is simply fantastic. The story is split in two books (the next is "Finding Eden"), so you need to read both otherwise you are left with a big cliffhanger. The second is equally beautiful and brings resolution. Cannot recommend them both more strongly.

This book is not at all  what I expected, but I was instantly sucked into this story of forbidden love between Calder and Eden. I could not put it down!

There is a reason that Mia Sheridan has become one of my favorite authors! This book is one of those reasons. Well written, well developed characters with the perfect recipe of disaster, intrigue and love. WOW! I wish I didn't have to go to work tomorrow so that I could begin Finding Eden right now. What a world! What a situation! What a test of love and faith! What a twist!...or 2 or 3! Absolute must read! I WILL BE READING THIS OVER AND OVER!! I'm speechless at the talent that crafted this tale. There is a little language and adult situations.

I really liked the concept of this story, but it became redundant and it took forever for anything to happen. I love Mia Sheridan and enjoyed this book, but wish it had been a bit more concise.

I don't think there is enough words to describe just how amazing this book was. But I keep coming back to one. AMAZING. This book was simply amazing. It grabbed at my emotions from page one and I simply couldn't put it down. Eden and Calder both meet as children. Calder and his family are members of an alternative community that live apart from modern society. There is no electricity, no running water, and they believe in a variety of Gods that bring balance to their little community. Then one day their leader Hector brings a young girl to their community. A young girl that they believe will one day help lead them to paradise, to Elysium. Though they are both children when they meet, they both feel a connection to one another. And that connection is just the beginning of something beautiful and tragic. As Calder and Eden grow into teenagers so do their feelings for one another. Calder knows she is forbidden, she is after all the "blessed one" but that doesn't stop his fascination with Eden. As for Eden she has limited contact with others but she loves Calder. He is her lifeline to "normal" and soon they begin meeting in secret. The little moments they share become everything to Calder and Eden and though they both know it is futile, they fall in love. And that love will begin a chain of events that will change their lives and the ones in their community. The characters of Calder and Eden are so well developed it was almost as if they were tangible people that I wanted to reach out and hug. They are strong characters and through their love they become stronger. As they begin to question the status quo and dream of the possibility of a life beyond their little community you can't help but hope for them, for their future. This book had a little bit of everything, my emotions were all over the place. A highly satisfying read by an author who is quickly becoming one of my favorites.

This is one of the bests books I've read in a long time. It is totally original, and has you feeling happy and sad, and angry all at the same time. The story is sweet and suspenseful. Just amazing.

Absolutely Brilliant!! Wow!! This book was absolutely amazing. It was such a different story than what I expected, but it was so much more than what I expected. In this first book, Becoming Calder, we meet Calder Raynes and see him grow from this happy, go lucky beautiful boy into this wonderful, loving, giving, patient and gorgeous man. We also meet Eden, who is an absolutely beautiful person, inside and out, and we also meet Xander Garen, who I love to death. Xander is not only funny and handsome, but he is Calder's best friend. Calder could not have asked for a better best friend than Xander, nor Xander a better best friend than Calder. This was a story about a love that was forbidden, but destined. It was a story about finding out who you are and what you truly believe in, as well as what you are willing to fight and risk your life for. It was a story that made me cry, but also made me hope and dance for joy. Mia Sheridan did an excellent job with this one, and once I started reading it, I completely understood why she broke it up into two books. I absolutely loved this story and could not wait to get to Finding Eden. Mia Sheridan is an amazing author who writes some of the most beautifully written love stories that I have ever read.

Another delightful Sign of Love novel - minor spoilers alert! I had originally planned to wait a while to read this one after coming off of an Archer’s Voice high. I couldn’t imagine any other novel of author Mia Sheridan’s comparing favorably so soon after I’d experienced the beautiful awesomeness of Archer’s story. Luckily, that plan changed when my Facebook discussion group picked Becoming Calder and Finding Eden for two of the group’s monthly reads and author chats. I missed the chat with Mia, but I am so glad that I followed through and read BC as soon as I did. Calder & Eden's connection was so authentic to me. Some readers may find the beginning to be slow, but I didn’t. I loved Mia’s talent for showing her characters at an early age. Seeing young Calder become immediately fascinated with young Eden tugged at my heart strings. I loved how their tentative contact turned from hesitantly friendly to sweet then to young horny, passionate and heartfelt love. The risks these two are forced to take eventually are incredible and extreme because of the “special” community they live in.  The supporting characters have their own appeal as well. Maya, Calder’s sweet natured and loving sister and Xander, Calder’s bestie were my two favorite secondary characters. I loved the little 3 squeeze hand signal that Calder and Maya create to substitute her past shouty “I love you” declarations to Calder. And Xander’s fierce loyalty to Calder totally merits him a top best friend for life award. Their commitment to “whatever I have, you have half” slogan becomes crucial as time goes on and they realize that maybe something isn’t quite right with the belief system of their little Acadia community. I have so many favorite moments highlighted or bookmarked in my e-reader. The below are just a small sampling of my top ones. ‘He was goodness–raw, unguarded goodness. It glowed in him. It was impossible not to want to drown in that type of beauty…to feel like I could happily wrap around his bones and suffocate in his skin. It alarmed me, and comforted me.’ ~ Eden  *Her description of Calder is so lovely and I absolutely loved her innate reaction to him.* ‘I exalted in the feeling of owning him completely in that very moment, feeling powerful and beautiful and loved.’ And, ‘for now, I’d take him any way I could, however I could, as many times as I could.’ ~ Eden *This! Here’s yet another achingly natural reaction and mental declaration of hers that I loved intensely.* “I love this. I love you, the feel of you, the smell of you, just you,” Calder panted. ‘I smiled. I loved how words started pouring out of him sometimes when we were physically intimate. It was another way he lost control and I loved it.’ ~ Eden *Swoon! Calder’s habit is so endearing!* “There are glorious things right here on earth, too, and I think they’re meant to be enjoyed. We weren’t created not to notice them…our hearts weren’t made to not take joy in the things we’ve been given right here.” ~ Calder *I certainly think the world be a happier and healthier place if only more people, both religious and non-religious, would realize this.* ‘You had to live every minute of the hard part in order to get to the good. Maybe that made it all the sweeter though. If you could just skip over the bad parts in life, the good parts would start to feel bland and emotionless.’ ~ Eden *I agree with her philosophy 100%. If I believed otherwise, I’d be suicidal based on my life experience so far.* ‘I had no idea where he ended and I began, only that we moved together, seeming to have melted into one unit. The heat of the shower–of him–had gotten into my head, surely. I was half out of my mind with emotion, exhaustion, love, and awe-inducing pleasure.’ *These two have many ‘firsts’ together and this is categorically one of my top favorite hottest moments between them.* “Uh, Eden, this isn’t unwelcome, but what exactly have you been doing for the last several hours?” She leaned back and looked up at me. “I’ve been reading.” She sighed, looking somewhere behind me. “Beautiful love stories about people destined to be together.”  *I loved the sexy and yet funny way this scene plays out. Eden and Calder are so lovable here that I want to hug and squeeze them both in shared delight.* Some real crazy stuff goes down in the last few chapters making it totally necessary to have Finding Eden at the ready in order to find out what happened next. I had three burning questions that needed to be answered with a quickness. What kind of justice would there be (if any) for what happens at Acadia? What kind of life could the survivors have? And lastly, how long would it take for the survivors to establish their new normal?

My heart is still beating rapidly!! Thank god the sequel, FINDING EDEN, is available! I swear if I was told I could only read books by one author- Mia Sheridan would be that author! A phenomenal storyteller, creative and original, I've read all her books and will continue to be a devoted fan. BECOMING CALDER is a wonderful love story packed with action, angst, romance, and a plot so unusual, you must experience it for yourself! I highly recommend this story! S.A.K.

~Reviewed by ANN & posted at Under the Covers Book Blog BECOMING CALDER is part of Mia Sheridan’s A Sign of Love series. But it is also the first part in a two-part story for Calder and Eden inspired by Aquarius. The second part to the story is called Finding Eden. I was interested in this story because of the concept of it. A lot of people seem to be fans of the series. I found Calder and Eden to be strong characters that have quite a cute and inspiring romance. Although this claims to be New Adult Contemporary, I didn’t think the secluded community that Calder is from really made it seem that way. They take to heart certain morals over others and when you throw in the Prophet and Acadia and all that, it really didn’t come across as something that could be relatable in the modern community especially in the beginning. Unfortunately, I didn’t like it. Calder and Eden form a strong bond early on in their life. It steadily progresses later on. There’s a sweetness to it all that make the romance very inspiring. But as I mentioned earlier, this is only the first part in a duology so the conclusion for them as yet to come. However for me, I think the problem lie in the execution and the writing style. A lot of people have been raving about the amazing writing. I personally found it to be quite choppy, preventing me from really and truly submerging into the storyline. As the story progressed, I found it easier but the beginning I really struggled with it as I tried to acclimate to the style that Sheridan infuses her books in. *ARC provided by author
