To mark the centennial of Robert Shaw's birth in 1916, ASO Media presents the live, unedited recording of Ludwig van Beethoven's "Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Choral," which Shaw made with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chorus on May 21, 1988. This 2016 release fills a gap in Shaw's discography, and even though he performed the "Ninth" on numerous occasions, his only other commercial recording of the symphony was an unsatisfactory release on Pro Arte. Remastered from analog masters to digital, this historic recording does Shaw and the orchestra justice, though its belated appearance at a time when hybrid SACDs and audio Blu-rays dominate the market makes it a specialty item. Casual listeners may have few problems with the sound quality, which is adequate for a live recording of its vintage, though audiophiles will notice the fairly shallow sound of the orchestra and several instances of audience noise. Collectors of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra's recordings will snap this CD up, though it faces considerable competition from other recordings with much better reproduction.
