Imagine the heart-wrenching devastation that is experienced by a family when a parent is diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease! In Before My Eyes, author Diane Currie shares her candid and personal reflections about her mother's struggle with this disease as she copes with the reality of the present but always honors the memory of the past.
Through a series of moving vignettes, she remains connected with her mother in a creative way as the strong bond between them slowly dissolves as the disease progresses. From the first moment of her mother's diagnosis, Currie conveys in a captivating manner the intense feelings of loss and hopelessness one experiences when dealing with this dreadful disease. She is able to portray the subtle changes in her mother's behavior and personality throughout her decline, all in a deeply human way.
While Before My Eyes describes one family's touching and painful journey, in essence Currie's reflective account may typify the Alzheimer's experience, while offering support and validation to all those who walk its arduous path.

In "Before My Eyes", Diane Currie gives the reader a first-hand experience with a family member (in her case her mother) who has alzheimer's disease. The personal stories she walks us through really help bring the story to life, and you feel as though you know the characters personally. While parts of her journey through this time are painful, Diane does a terrific job of helping the reader connect with a disease that many have heard of, but few understand. Through the ups and downs of this time in her life, the author really helped me see that I cannot take family for granted and need to cherish every moment and chance I have to share with them. If you get the chance to read this, I strongly encourage you to do so. You will not be disappointed.
"Before My Eyes" by Diane Currie is a clear, well-written account of her own journey as her mother goes through the stages of Alzheimers. She eloquently expresses the feelings and transitions family members experience as the disease progresses. Other families who have loved ones with the disease will find in this book an understanding, compassionate companion as well as information. Donna Padalino (Chesterfield, NJ)
I was very touched by this heart felt book. The reader receives a true appreciation for the patience needed to care for someone with Alzheimer's. Yet the author never wavered in her support of her mother. This is a great read for someone who is in the midst of caring for a loved one with Alzheimer's. I highly recommend this book.
"Before My Eyes" takes the reader along as a mother and daughter journey into the world of Alzheimer's disease. The eloquently composed vignettes bring the reader beyond a scientific diagnosis into the daily, often painful experiences of a loving daughter slowly loosing her mother to a disease few fully understand. It's a loving tribute to the bond of love between a mother and daughter; a bond even Alzheimer's can not break. "Before My Eyes" is a must read for mothers, daughters and anyone struggling with the devastating effects of Alzheimer's disease on those they love.
