I've owned several well behaved dogs in the past. Part of the reason they were well behaved is because I'm always searching for new or better ways to train my dogs. I'm sure that if everything were followed to the letter in this book, you would have a remarkably well behaved dog. But what does that mean?? It means never buying from a breeder that doesn't raise his puppies in the house (he equates kennel raised puppies to livestock). It means getting a dog that is no more than 8 weeks of age, 6 being better. And it means if you do get a puppy eight weeks of age, he should come, roll-over, sit, lay down, be 'error free' housetrained and chew trained. If all those thing are not done by eight weeks of age than your puppy is already 'developmentally disabled' and will 'never reach its full potential'. WOW!! He also seems to put little if any stock in the breed of the dog as being any indicator of its future nature. (as someone who has owned 2 chesapeakes, a great white pyranees, a Dalmation and a sheltie - I found this to be absurd). In a nutshell, if you're looking to get your first puppy and have little or no experience than hey, follow this book and it will work. If you were 'foolish' enough to buy a puppy that is already 8 weeks of age or more, or from a breeder that raises his puppies in a kennel (regardless of the breeders reputation), or a puppy that is over 8 weeks old and doesn't already do the dishes and vacuum the carpet, than you might want to look to a more common sense book.
