About the Author

MICHAEL HUYGHUE gained widespread prominence as the youngest and one of the first black general managers in professional football. He held a top leadership role in operations for the NFL owners and served as senior vice president for football operations of the start up NFL team Jacksonville Jaguars. (During the team's first five seasons he lead the club to more wins than any new franchise in the history of the NFL, including a remarkable two AFC Championship game appearances.) Huyghue's career also included stops at the Detroit Lions, the NFL Management Council and the NFL Players Association.

A lawyer by training, Huyghue lectures extensively on professional sports and sports law. He received his undergraduate degree from Cornell University, where he was a star football player and is a former member of the board of trustees. Huyghue earned his J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School and is admitted to the bar in New York, New Jersey and Michigan.

Super relevant--this book is a must read! With the odds stacked against him, Michael writes about the stairs he climbed composed of discrimination and racism to reach top-ranking positions inside the front office of the NFL. Although he describes himself as a “token black person” who was given opportunities to fulfil a quota, Michael maintained his success through nothing short of hard work and sacrifice. As a fan of sports, it was interesting to see the politics of the NFL and the sports industry in general. Michael’s story is truly inspiring and something every reader can find value in.

In Behind the Line of Scrimmage, Michael Huyghue reflects on over 30 years of experience in the professional sports industry coupled with his journey as one of the highest-ranking African American executives in the NFL. It's not only a great read for sports fans, but also sheds light on some of the most prominent social injustices that continue to plague our society everyday. Michael provides invaluable behind-the-scenes insight into the sports world and, perhaps most importantly, he provides hope for constructive change. Truly an inspiring & amazing read!
