Overview

Infertility can be one of the most stressful and heartbreaking journeys that a woman or couple can experience. Dr. Pentland explains how to optimize your chances of getting pregnant naturally or with IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) using evidence-based Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and acupuncture.

This book also contains real-life stories from couples who have experienced the process and features innovative but practical tips on coping with the associated stresses of infertility and IVF procedures, how diet, attitude, the relationship of hormones, the male factor and other conditions play a role, and how to keep joy and hope in your lives during your journey in creating a happy, healthy family.

INTRODUCTION
If you were baking a cake for someone you loved on a special occasion, you would take great care to follow the recipe, right? You would preheat the oven and use the best quality ingredients, you would stir and whip and measure with the utmost of care before baking it at just the right temperature and watching it mindfully. And the results would be magnificent and worth the effort.

But that's just a cake...

The subject of this book is how to create the most precious thing of all--a human life, so I trust you will want to heed an even greater regard for the recipe at hand. I have included 10 steps, each one as important as the next. I cannot guarantee with absolute certainty that you will reach your goal. My experience has shown me time and again that these steps will greatly improve your chances. If you follow them, you will improve your physical and emotional health and provide the best possible environment for your unborn child.

It is a great privilege for me to share my knowledge with you as we embark on the most important and rewarding journey of your life. I wish you happy and healthy children and to know the joys of being a parent in whatever way that comes to you.

Let's get started, shall we?

STEP 1 - Ancient Healing: An Overview of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

STEP 2 - Goal Setting: Getting from point A to point B by breaking down what needs to be done.

STEP 3 - Self-Monitoring: Learning to pay attention to your body's signals.

STEP 4 - Nurturing Your Spirit Looking inside to get the whole picture.

STEP 5 - Curing Yourself with Diet and Supplements: Looking inside to get the whole picture.

STEP 6 - Get Moving: What to Do and How to Start.

STEP 7 - Toxin Awareness What to avoid when you're trying to conceive.

STEP 8 - Treatments and Alternatives to Enhance TCM How to increase your chances of success.

STEP 9 - Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART): The ins and outs of integrating TCM with IVF.

STEP 10 - Men's Health and Well-being: Tips for increasing male fertility.

It is my sincere hope that this book will give you the necessary ingredients to create the recipe for a more fertile you.

Taking care of your health and well-being is the first priority once you have chosen to start a family. I hope I have provided a fuller understanding of Chinese Medicine as it relates to your reproductive health, and how it can help fulfill your dream of creating a happy healthy family.

Please be sure to take the time to organize the chapter tasks into an action plan. Committing to this plan will help prepare your body mind and spirit for conception and a healthy pregnancy.

Work diligently to cultivate faith that you are taking the necessary steps toward 'being fertile' and that your body can do this, thereby surrendering and releasing yourself to enjoy life in the meantime. The final and possibly most important ingredient left is to dig deep and find the strength required to persevere.

I wish you all the best creating your family.

About the Author

Since 2004, Dr. Spence Pentland has focused exclusively on the treatment of men's and women's reproductive health - specifically infertility, IVF support, and its related conditions including polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), endometriosis, recurrent pregnancy loss, and male factor infertility. His Vancouver clinic, Yinstill Reproductive Wellness, aids couples in realizing their dreams of creating happy healthy families.

Mission & Vision: 'optimize the health of my clients, increase a couple's chances of healthy conception, build happy families, and help cultivate a healthy fertile world.'

Dr. Pentland, along with Dr. Jeffrey Roberts of The Pacific Centre for Reproductive Medicine (PCRM), and Dr. Christine Sutton of the University of British Columbia, authored research published in 'Fertility & Sterility' (a respected peer reviewed medical journal) on the stress reducing effects of acupuncture when administered in the weeks leading up to an IVF embryo transfer.

Spence is a Doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine, a Fellow of the American Board of Oriental Reproductive Medicine, and is certified by the Canadian Association of Oriental Obstetrical Medicine (CAOOM). He is a member of Infertility Awareness Association, the Canadian Fertility and Andrology Society, the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, and the Canadian Association of Oriental Obstetrical Medicine.

Dr. Pentland is founder of The IVF Acupuncture Group of Greater Vancouver, available 7 days a week for on site embryo transfer and acupuncture treatments at the Pacific Centre for Reproductive Medicine (PCRM). "The integrated relationship I have established with these clinics is something that I value very much as it expands my knowledge, gives me the opportunity to reach more people, and helps me better understand how to support women on their journey toward family." says Dr. Pentland.

Aside from his extensive clinical experience, much of his expertise stems from extensive learning from and study with Dr. Jane Lyttleton, Dr. Randine Lewis, Dr. Paul Magarelli, Dr. Paul Turek, Dr. Elisabet Stener-Victorin, Sharon Weizenbaum, Dr. David Bray, Dr. Brandon Horn, Dr. DAoshing Ni, Debra Betts, Bob Flaws, and Peter Deadman. He also attributes his overall success to his many esteemed mentors in the field of personal development.
