This book kept me hanging on, and when it ended I got so upset, because I wanted to know more about them. They had a beautiful, untouchable romance, and it gave me more courage to believe in love. I read it every chance I get. Belle was so empowering to me, and her connection to Daniel blew me away.

Short but good book. This is the second book that I have read by Beverly Jenkins. Her stories are well written and touching. I cried thinking of the horrible world of slavery. These stories take you back to that time and you can imagine what it must have been like for her characters. Good read.

I definitely enjoyed Belle and Daniel's love story. It is a nice love story as well as a history lesson. So much so that I had to Google to learn more about:Frederick Douglass' personal life as well as his mistress Julia> Griffiths - such a sad story; General Toussaint-Louverture, the Haitian slaves freedom, and the Haiti nation; Birth of the Liberia nation; Oberlin college; People such as: Frances Ellen Watkins, Maria W. Stewart, William Lambert,Mary Ann Shadd, George DeBaptiste, Poem 'Bury Me In A Free Land' - in its entirety; such a beautiful poem; The Group 'Order of the African Mysteries' - didn't find anything; Newspapers: 'Weekly Anglo-African', 'Freedom's Journal'; The Supreme Court's 1858 Dred Scott decision, Free Produce, Colonel William Hubbard & Ashtabula, Godey' Lady's book, Slaves being mailed in boxes to freedom - had never heard about that until reading this book, Mind feast social gatherings, August 1^st celebrations while not celebrating July 4^th, Slave holding pens, Quilt signals - safe or unsafe, Miniature jockey freedom lamps, Citizens of Christiana, Pennsylvania 1851, Centaurs, Gods, Muses. I was born in 1954 and even though I grew up in a small town with both black and white people, our history books didn't deal too much with black history. So I had never heard until reading this book about black folks having white servants. I do have some fond memories regarding homemade ice cream though. I remember looking forward to the outcome when Momma would get the hand cranked ice cream maker, the rock salt, and the custard. I can almost taste that vanilla ice cream now. I have purchased the book 'Belle' - can't remember how many times I have read it. I checked out the library book 'Belle & the Beau'. Excellent read. Loved both stories, but 'Belle' is my favorite. Purchased the paperback. The model on front is so pretty and is dressed for that period. The book 'Josephine' covers Josephine & Adam love story. Excellent story as well.
